Little Free Pantry - Littleton, NH "Take what you need...Leave what you can." What a great way to help!

"What should we donate?" This is a question we hear all the time. All donations are very much appreciated but here are some tips for anyone looking to give in a more meaningful way this holiday season:

Think about what food means to you. For most of us it is not just keeping us alive. We gather together with family and friends, provide for our loved ones, make memories preparing food with our children, leave cookies for Santa, etc.

1. Consider putting together a meal kit such as the ones suggested by Dollar Tree Dinners. A lot of time people don't know what to do with the food in the pantry. How do you make dinner with a can of corn, a can of green beans and a box of pasta? A story was shared with us once about how it makes a person feel if day after day they are trying to make ends meet with the available thin tomato soup. Hearty soup sends a much different message (look for sales or Walmart has a store brand hearty soup for $1.50 a can. But, better still is giving a recipe and the means for someone to make a meal.

2. Mixes! Cake mixes and frosting, brownie mixes, cookie mixes. When was the last time you celebrated a birthday without a cake? Often these things are overlooked because they are not essential

3. On sub zero days like today we encourage donations of frozen foods rather than cans to prevent freezing. Consider picking a cold day to provide a warm gift.

4. What do you like to eat? Consider buying two of your kids favorite cereal, or your favorite snack. You can even take advantage of buy one get one free sales and give the free one to the pantry.

Thank you for sharing with your neighbors!

This site has some awesome ideas!! Consider putting together a meal kit or two with your family as we move into the season of being Thankful.

Dignity.

When times are hard, dignity can be one of the first things to slip away and that’s something I think about a lot when I make my Meal in a Bag kits.

I see the comments sometimes “Why not just buy a can of soup?” or “Wouldn’t it be cheaper to hand someone a can of chili instead of making a 5-can chili?”

And yes, maybe it would be. But what you’re giving with a Meal in a Bag isn’t just food. You’re giving someone the experience of preparing a meal…of opening ingredients, following a recipe, and sitting down to something they made themselves, even if it is simple, it still feels homemade.

That’s dignity. ❤️

That’s why I take the time to make my recipe cards look nice, to package everything neatly, to make it feel like a gift. Because it is a gift, one that says, “You matter. You deserve something that feels special.” Give someone the gift of dignity.

It’s not about soup or chili or the cost of a few cans. It’s about giving people back a little bit of normalcy, a little comfort, and a lot of heart.

Please do not use the pantry to get rid of things you no longer want! This is added work and expense for our pantry volunteers. No clothing or household items, opened food, etc.

Suggested donations: unopened non perishable foods - cereal, shelf stable milk, canned fruit, canned meat, hearty soups etc. We do allow new or handmade hats, gloves, and socks, new personal hygiene products, and new diapers and wipes. If it is not on this list, feel free to ask or please stick to just food.

The generosity of the community during the holidays was noticed and was much appreciated!! Friendly reminder: there are typically less donations after the holidays and we still have several cold months to get through. Let's make sure that those in need have some food to collect when they arrive at the pantry from a chilly walk!! Warming foods - soup, instant oatmeal, ramen are especially welcomed at the moment but don't forget our always welcomed staples - meat in a can or pouch, fruit, pasta, cereal, etc. On subzero days - consider frozen meals!
Take advantage of buy one get one deals in stores...one for you and one for the pantry.

"Take what you need, leave what you can."

The September 2024 in-store penny jar donations will benefit the Littleton Little Free Pantry. As of the writing of this post, the shelves could use a little love. Every penny donated this month will be dedicated to filling these shelves and helping those in need!

Today a lot of love was shown to the pantry, by several people with huge hearts. We are incredibly grateful!! The pantry has been a vital resource within our community since 2019. So many people have helped and been helped!! Today's love was necessary due to an intentional mess which was made in the pantry. Please remember that the good has far outweighed the bad and please remember to be kind - the pantry is anonymous for a reason we shouldn't be making assumptions on how in need people are or if they are taking more than their fair share as they could very well be sharing with others. The best way to keep this important resource in our community is to all be the eyes and ears of the community. Bad things won't happen if there is constant foot traffic of community members dropping off one small thing...

One of the best ways to help our neighbors is to keep the pantry stocked AND to keep the pantry clean! We greatly appreciate anyone who is willing to help in either area!! We have noted an increase in messes lately (one intentional mess and several cases of trash left behind from folks eating in or around the pantry) So much good happens through the pantry, please help us keep it going as the amazing resource that is it!!
