Red House Brook Chapter - Trout Unlimited

Red House Brook Chapter - Trout Unlimited We work to conserve, protect and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Red House Brook Chapter was chartered on May 16, 1992.

The founding members of the Red House Brook Chapter first got together to discuss the idea of forming a chapter of Trout Unlimited in 1991. Over the course of the winter months, ideas were turned into actions and an application to charter a chapter was sent to Trout Unlimited. In its original conception we thought geographical boundaries of the chapter were only going to include Cattaraugus County

, thus the name Red House Brook. Red House Brook is an important stream in Allegany State Park that the proposed chapter was hoping to work on in the future. But when received our charter, we had also been given Chautauqua and Allegany County up to the Genesee River. Since then we have ceded our half of Allegany County to help form the Upper Genesee River Chapter. The chapter has established a good reputation with its many partners; over the years we have worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers, NYS DEC, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua County Soil and Water. Western NY Chapter of TU, SUNY Fredonia, Boy Scouts and various landowners. We have completed several stream projects both large and small. We started a three-year Embrace-A-Stream project financed by TU National on lower Quaker Run. In 2008 we worked with the DEC, USF&WS , SUNY Fredonia, WNYTU, on McIntosh Creek in Allegany St. Park This was an important Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture study. We have done major stream clean ups on Elm Creek near the Town of Randolph and Clear Creek in Ellington. Also, a restoration project on Clear Creek near Sandusky, this project re-connected a stream that had a barrier that stopped fish from passing upstream, this was done with the DEC, USF&WS, and WNYTU. Every year some chapter members work with the DEC in region 9 doing electro-shocking stream surveys, we help stock trout, and we also support Cattaraugus and Chautauqua County Envirothons. In addition, at this time we also support several Trout in the Classroom Projects.

Dear chapter members and anyone else who is interested in the chapter.
The Red House Brook Chapter Has not held a meeting on over a year, this was mainly due to the suspension of meetings (other than virtual) by TU National. Even before this the chapter's meetings were lightly attended and the chapters membership has shown little interest in the chapter. The Board of Directors are now asking the membership what would you like us to do? To be able to keep the chapter going some of its members need to step forward and assume some of the responsibilities of running the chapter. And if there is no interest in doing this then we will have to forfeit our charter and the chapter will cease to exist.
If you are interested in helping to keep the chapter going please reply by the first of February, that can be done here, or Email [email protected], or phone or text

I was sent a reminder by one of my friends about fishing this time of year.

If you must go fishing go early, once the sun comes out it doesn't take long to warm the water. Strenuous temps for Brook Trout start around 64 degrees, for Browns and Rainbows its a little higher about 68 degrees, rule of thumb after 70 degrees don't fish.

This is a good time of the year to get out your Steelhead rod and some Bass bugs, and chase some warm water fish its a lot of fun!

Here is the letter to Cold Waters Fishery Unit in support of the Proposed Draft Fisheries Management Plan, sent by the NYSCTU

Re: NYS Inland Trout Stream Management proposal

Fred,

On behalf of the New York State Council of Trout Unlimited, I would like to commit our support for the NYSDEC Draft Fisheries Management Plan for Inland Trout Streams in New York State. Our Executive Committee members have voted unanimously to support the plan.

We are pleased that the Fisheries Management Plan recognizes the value of wild and native fish. With this we applaud the inclusion of Wild, Wild-Quality and Wild-Premiere as a recognition of special trout waters within the state in support of sustainable wild fisheries. Given the loss of habitat for wild, native brook trout over the years, we hope this will lay a foundation for its sustainability.

The council is also pleased to see that habitat restoration is an integral part of the management plan and that there are provisions to improve wild designated reaches to wild quality reaches.

Our Conservation Committee has replied with our specific comments and suggestions on the plan.

Our chapters and members are excited about the future of New York Fisheries and your vision for the future.

Respectfully

Larry

I see that I have reached and or engaged quite a few people about the Trout Stream Management Plan. Again this is one of the most significant plans to come out of the DEC Fisheries in the past 30 years. And thank you for taking the time to look at the post, now please take a few moments to send a comment of approval to the DEC.

I would like to encourage the NYS trout fishermen to take a little time and look over the proposed Fisheries Management Plan for Inland Trout Streams, It has been THIRTY years since the state has addressed our inland trout streams, and it is long over due. As in all plans that try to address a state wide issue it will not be perfect but overall its a good plan, and is not cast in stone. In a conservation with Steve Hurst DEC Fisheries Manager he assured me that if something isn't working it will be addressed. And I have talked to the DEC fisheries people in Allegany about the plan and they believe this is a good plan and again, long overdue. The one thing that is controversial in some parts of NYS is year around trout fishing with some exceptions to some protected streams, this is not new to us in Region 9 as we have had these regulations on some of our better streams for over ten years. This plan is looking to the future of Trout fishing in NYS, not living in the past, please read it, and support it! Sent your comments via Email to [email protected] subject line trout stream plan.

Draft Fisheries Management Plan for Inland Trout Streams

Dear Trout Stream Angler,

Thank you for your participation in at least one of the trout stream management meetings held since 2017. The Draft Fisheries Management Plan for Inland Trout Streams is available on the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) website for public comment until June 25, 2020. The purpose of this fisheries management plan is to guide the efforts and resources of the DEC toward managing New York’s trout stream fisheries according to their ecological and recreational potential. The Plan was written to communicate what outcomes the DEC will strive to achieve while managing for a diversity of fishing experiences and provide anglers with the means to find those experiences. Plan objectives and strategies address the management of both wild and stocked trout, habitat enhancement and protection, public access, and outreach.

Instructions for submitting comments are provided on the website. We look forward to receiving your comments.
