Breast self-exams are crucial for day-to-day breast cancer prevention. Starting in their 20s, women should be taught how to look and feel for anomalies in their own breasts. Women should report any changes in how their breasts look or feel to a health expert right away.

While we do not yet know exactly what causes breast cancer, we know that certain risk factors are linked to the disease. Having a risk factor doesn't mean that a woman will certainly develop breast cancer. Some women who have one or more risk factors never get the disease.

Eating healthful food for breast cancer prevention is important. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are known to contain phytochemicals with antioxidant, antiestrogen and chemopreventive properties that may prevent cancer. We recommend five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Cristine Meredith Miele (“Crissy”) was a mother, wife, avid athlete (tennis player, skier, golfer, and runner), world traveler, chef, gardener, and a dear friend to many. Crissy was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer when she was 28 years old. Pregnant with her third child, the pair went through a radical mastectomy and several rounds of chemotherapy together. She delivered her baby boy early to begin an even more intense treatment program that included more chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, radiation, and hormone therapy.
Crissy’s prognosis was not good, but she fought hard and lived another twelve years. She resumed playing competitive tennis, skiing, playing golf, and taking care of her three children with her husband in the most loving and wonderful way. When Crissy’s cancer returned, it had metastasized to her liver, lungs, and bones. She continued to fight into the last weeks of her life, never giving up hope that she would somehow beat the disease. Crissy passed away in July 2010, a valiant warrior in the fight against breast cancer and an inspiration to us all. Help us keep her efforts ongoing by supporting her cause.
The Cristine Meredith Miele Foundation funds research focused on risk assessment and early detection of breast cancer. Detecting breast cancer early, before it metastasizes, results in significantly higher chances for survival. By helping advance risk assessment and early detection efforts, it’s our hope that we can help women live longer, more peaceful lives.
Mission Statement
To defeat breast cancer through awareness, research, and prevention.
How are we different?
Early detection of breast cancer is critical, as most early stage breast cancers are curable. We are committed to promote early detection for women in our community. We want women, especially those at high risk for the disease, to be able to receive all of the genetic testing available.
Because family history plays such an important role in a woman’s risk for breast cancer, genetic testing can be an integral part of early detection. We help women whose family history puts them at high risk for developing breast cancer by supplementing funds for further genetic testing, especially for women who are BRCA negative.
Where does your money go?
Due to our minimal overhead and administrative costs, 90-95% of donations received go directly toward funding The Parker Family Health Center’s Women’s Breast Health Initiative. Our staff is 100% volunteer. Thank you for joining and supporting our efforts. Together, we can make a difference!
