The Rest of the Story…….. On a Cold Snowy December Night in 2010, we were dining at Applebees on Baseline! As we sat there watching the snow accumulate thinking, we better hurry and get going, we saw him! A Homeless Man pushing a Walmart Cart with all of his soul possessions in tow. It was FREEZING out there ❄️ Marty got up from our warm cozy booth by the window and went outside. I hadn’t the foggiest what he was doing until I saw the exchange happening right outside my window. With A simple greeting and a handshake, Marty reached inside his coat pockets for his pair of gloves and handed them to the Gentleman pushing the Walmart Cart. Thus began a friendship that would Open our eyes to an unimaginable world and a brand new community that we had never laid eyes on. The Homeless/Unsheltered Community. They called him “Bagman” on the street, we called him, William! He was as chronically Homeless as you would suppose one to be. Underneath all the garments, was a Human being, A Man with a turbulent Past who was riddled with addictions. We came to know & Love William over the next several years and would learn that he had a beautiful Family over in Tennessee. Through the wide wonderful world of Social Media, we were able to connect with his 2 Sisters, Lee and Leslie! William faded in and out of our lives over the course of the next 12ish years. Addiction & homelessness knows no bounds. In a naive attempt to help him “get away from the crowd and get off drugs” he and his sweet dog and companion, Lady, stayed with us for about 6 weeks. William left unexpectedly, returning to the crowd and the Life that kept him shackled. His companion, dog, Lady, stayed behind, with us🐶 Through FB, I periodically stayed in contact with Leslie & Lee, informing them of the latest sightings of William and relaying any words from him back to them. Succumbing to the perils of the world in Which he lived, William passed away 2 years ago! He knew Jesus. He was Free at Last!
Last week I received an out of the blue message from Lee! She and her Mom were coming to Little Rock to see Nate Bargatze and she had an extra ticket and asked If I would like to go with them! Sayyyyy Whattttttt!!!! We had yet to meet in actual person after all of these years! Of Course I wanted to Go! Last night we met in a sketchy parking lot by Simmons Arena. 2 total strangers coming together for the first time. A Friendship made possible by a troubled homeless man we encountered 15 years ago. A Man She calls “Bubba”! A Man named William, we call Friend! William King, You have a Beautiful Family! You Mattered! Because of you, we are linked together. You made a difference. You are LoVed💙 “He has made everything beautiful in His time”.
