It was an absolutely beautiful day Friday to be out with the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation. We visited about ways to make The Natural State even more special for visitors and natives through projects across Arkansas. Of particular interest are trash collection booms that stretch across waterways.

Did you know…
💧Arkansas enjoys one of the largest inventories of navigable waterways in the nation with 1800 miles along five rivers?
💧That it is THIRD in the nation in the number of inland waterway miles?
💧And that Arkansas is one of only 24 states in the United States to have the unique resource of inland waterways?
…all this according to The Arkansas Waterway Commission.

Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation would enjoy partnering with businesses and organizations who wish to sponsor trash collection booms. These booms are one of the wonderful tools that we can deploy to Keep Arkansas Beautiful.

Members of the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation met this week and toured a water boom system on the property of Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Booms like this are available for corporate sponsorship to help protect waterways across The Natural State by collecting trash.

Plastic bags are plastic, but they do not belong in your home recycling bin. They tangle recycling equipment and cause shutdowns at facilities. The good news, they can still be recycled.

Take clean, dry plastic bags to designated drop-off locations instead. Many grocery stores across Arkansas accept them, including Walmart, Kroger and other major retailers. Look for collection bins near the store entrance. Some local recycling centers also accept plastic bags and film.

Recycle right, keep them out of the bin, and give plastic bags a second chance instead of a landfill!

What a truly inspiring and impactful way to recycle plastic grocery bags! Shoutout to the First Presbyterian Church in Batesville for recycling these often littered bags into sleeping bags for the homeless.

If you're interested in donating your bags contact the First Presbyterian Church at 775 E. Boswell ST. Batesville, AR.

For nearly two years, members of Batesville’s First Presbyterian Church have been getting together every Monday in the church’s fellowship hall to weave plastic grocery bags into sleepi…

Litter and spaces neglected reduce economic development and tourism, and often welcomes crime, pests and health risks. Spaces you want to grow in your community need love and attention to help them prosper.

Here’s something nobody wants to hear about downtown revitalization. You don’t need more money. You don’t need another survey. You don’t need to wait for the perfect developer.

You need a broom.

Seriously.

I’ve worked with hundreds of struggling downtowns. They all want to talk about economic development strategies, TIF districts, and comprehensive plans.

Meanwhile, their Main Street has w**ds growing through the sidewalk cracks, trash in the tree wells, and peeling paint on half the storefronts.

You know what kills civic pride faster than anything? Walking past decay every single day.

You know what builds it? Seeing your downtown get 1% better every single day.

So try this instead. Pick one block. Just one. Get five friends together on Saturday morning. Bring trash bags, work gloves, and w**d pullers. Spend two hours making that block look loved.

Then take a photo. Share it. Do it again next month.
I promise you this, people will notice. Business owners will notice, city council member will notice, the neighbors will notice.

Progress is contagious. But someone has to start.

Will it be you?
