Fed Is Best Foundation

Fed Is Best Foundation Fed Is Best honors every path to a healthy baby whether you feed with breast milk, formula, or both

The Fed is Best Foundation works to identify critical gaps in current breastfeeding and formula feeding protocols, guidelines, and education programs. We provide families and health professionals with the most up-to-date scientific research, education, and resources to practice safe infant feeding with breast milk, formula, or a combination of both. To be fully informed, parents must be taught the

risks of insufficient breast milk intake when supporting exclusive breastfeeding in order to prevent hospitalizations for insufficient feeding complications. Finally, we strive to eliminate infant feeding shaming while prioritizing perinatal mental health. The Fed is Best Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a strict policy of not accepting any funds or donations from organizations or companies that produce and sell infant feeding products or services, both breastfeeding, bottle feeding or formula. We do this in order to provide parents and health professionals with unbiased and safe infant feeding advice. Our organization is funded by the private donations of our supporters, which include health professionals and parents. Our safe infant feeding education resources are provided for free because we believe that safe infant feeding is a human right and should be available to every family.

Moms are EXHAUSTED!!!

“The work and time spent on caring for children is undervalued and often invisible," says Dr. Vernon. "Moms often carry the stress and burden of raising children without society acknowledging how this burden affects them. It leads to burnout and mental health struggles."

Burden of care, lack of mental health care access, and even social media are among the reasons mothers are struggling. Experts share advice.

As a breastfeeding mom, Kylie says:
"Don’t comment on breastfeeding,” she said. It's
None of your (expletive) business.”

Kylie Kelce went on to describe the “breast is best” slogan — which advocates for breastfeeding as the optimal method of infant feeding — as “nonsense.”

My first two births were unplanned C-sections and took a while to process. The last two were planned C-sections and I knew what to expect.

An article out of Finland interviewed multiple moms about their experiences with the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. A mom reported being objectified and grabbed by the breast to feed her baby. When the baby was showing signs of not getting enough milk, they denied her request for supplemental nutrition and her baby lost greater than 10% before discharge requiring an extended hospital admission that could’ve been prevented.

The pediatrician in the article talks about the dangers of low blood sugars that can result from underfeeding and its long term effects on brain development. Furthermore, signs of underfeeding are completely normalized to promote exclusive breastfeeding to the point that some health professionals no longer have any idea of what the actual signs are of a baby who is dangerously underfed.

This is perhaps the most dangerous policy that has been ever written and it is promoted globally for the supposed benefit of mothers and babies. When will it stop? Did this happen to you and your baby?

Part 2: Supplementation is not failure. Supplementation saves lives.

Prior to the WHO promoting EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding as the priority for almost all babies, mothers routinely supplemented breastfeeding when it appeared to not be enough. This protected the babies who would be put at risk of dehydration and starvation when the mother did not produce enough milk. Now as a result of the cultural bias to treat supplementation as the last resort, parents across the globe have been led to underfeed their babies in the pursuit of exclusive breastfeeding resulting in completely preventable hospitalizations and worse. The shaming of supplementation and its treatment as a last resort has got to stop. Supplementation can even help sustain breastfeeding by keeping a baby calm and fed while the nursing parent is working out the challenges of breast/chestfeeding. Were you shamed or discouraged from supplementing your baby? Did it result in a feeding complication? What do you think health professionals need to do to help parents succeed in their feeding journeys?
