Arkansas is proud to have an active, successful, and nationally-recognized youth development and educational livestock programs in 4-H. The Arkansas Youth Livestock Program has touched thousands of lives over the years. The Arkansas junior livestock programs teach skills to youth that carry them throughout their adult lives. Feeding, exercising, grooming, and showing animals are all important aspe

cts of the 4-H project. 4-H'ers also learn to make decisions, keep records, manage money, take responsibility for another living thing, budget time, and many other important characteristics. The "Grand Finale" for most of these projects is exhibiting their animals at the county fair, district livestock show, or the State Fair. Youth also develop knowledge through participation in judging programs, livestock skills events, quiz bowls, camps and public speaking events.

✨Internship Spotlight✨
We have wrapped up all of the District 4-H horse shows! Katelynn traveled across Arkansas assisting with the District 4-H Horse Shows in Sheridan, Fayetteville, and Searcy. She helped check in exhibitors, enter scores, set patterns, prep awards, and assisted with overall show operations.
Traveling to each district provided the opportunity to meet 4-H members, volunteers, county agents, and families across Arkansas. Through these experiences, Katelynn learned valuable insight into Arkansas 4-H horse programming and event planning while witnessing firsthand the positive impact these events have on youth development and leadership skill building.

We wrapped up with a livestock judging contest, giving campers the chance to put everything they learned throughout the week to the test.

A huge thank you to all of the campers, coaches, volunteers, and livestock producers who helped make this week possible. We are proud of each participant and can’t wait to see where their livestock judging journey takes them next!

Fun Night at the Rich Mountain Livestock Judging Camp was a success!

After a great day of evaluating hogs, goats, and lambs, campers spent the evening playing volleyball, basketball, and a variety of other games. It was a great opportunity to relax, build friendships, and enjoy some friendly competition outside of the judging arena.

Contest pictures are coming soon, so stay tuned!

✨Internship Spotlight✨
Last week, our interns visited southern Arkansas with Dr. Kubesch. At the Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope, Ashlyn monitored the ongoing Better Bahia project with some of the Ouachita District agents. She also helped to replant bermudagrass check plots on that trial. Bahiagrass is a major forage in southwest Arkansas. Later, they drove to Grant Co to help monitor a crabgrass trial on a working farm. The trial is a multi-county, multi-state effort to better define establishment success and failure in forage systems. Both interns also compared several common measurements against the visual appraisal of the farmer, the Grant County Agent, and Dr. Kubesch. The interns have hit the ground running the summer! Ashlyn can't wait to share more about her Arkansas adventures!
