Can you imagine what it would be like if the people in that beautiful building fought this hard for ALL kids rather than just the weaker families?

As the 25-26 school year comes to a close, I want to say a couple of things.

I fully acknowledge your exhaustion, but please stop for just a moment and acknowledge mine.

I fully acknowledge the ocean of tears that have been shed, but please pause to acknowledge mine.

I fully acknowledge the feelings of anxiety and sadness that touched so many lives this year, but please look over at me and acknowledge mine.

I fully acknowledge the feeling of fear for the future so many of you feel today, but please take a deep breath and acknowledge mine.

I hold each of you in my hand like a mother walking her child across a busy intersection in a tremendous place full of monsters…

I beg you to stop, listen, look both ways, pay attention to your surroundings, and BE BOLD, BE THE CHANGE.

Like that mother trying to teach her child to cross the street, I’ve tried to explain the world today and the need for vigilance.

I’ve tried to explain that things ARE different.

I’ve tried to explain how things work NOW.

I’ve tried to explain what YOU need to do to make CHANGE.

I’ve held YOUR HAND, I’ve stood by YOUR SIDE, I’ve cried YOUR TEARS, I’ve felt YOUR FEAR,
I’ve fought with you for CHANGE but…

I. CANNOT. WANT. IT. MORE. THAN. YOU. DO

THINK ABOUT IT THURSDAY
Apathy: a lack of interest, concern, motivation, or emotional investment.

It’s not just “being tired” or “needing a break.” Apathy is when people stop believing their actions matter, so they stop caring enough to act.

You can think of it as:

“Why bother? Nothing will change anyway.”

Apathy often grows slowly. People usually don’t start there. They get there after repeated frustration, burnout, disappointment, feeling ignored, or believing they have no real power.

What happens when apathy takes over

In schools

* Teachers stop speaking up in meetings.
* Staff quit offering ideas because “they already decided.”
* Bad policies continue because nobody fights them anymore.
* Innovation dies and people just comply.
* Toxic behavior becomes normalized because no one has the energy to challenge it.
* Good teachers leave. The remaining teachers emotionally detach to survive.

In organizations

* Meetings become silent.
* People do the bare minimum.
* Leaders mistake compliance for agreement.
* Problems grow because everyone assumes someone else will handle them.
* Participation drops — fewer volunteers, fewer candidates, fewer people willing to lead.
* Morale collapses quietly before performance collapses publicly.

In communities or politics

* Citizens stop voting because they think it doesn’t matter.
* People stop attending meetings or paying attention to legislation.
* Small groups gain more power because the majority disengages.
* Corruption or extremism grows in the vacuum left by disengaged people.
* Rights erode not because everyone agreed, but because too many stopped resisting.

One of the most dangerous parts of apathy:

It often looks calm from the outside.

People assume:

* “No one’s complaining, so things must be okay.”

* Anger says: “This is wrong.”
* Hope says: “We can fix it.”
* Apathy says: “Nothing matters.”

And once a group reaches apathy, it becomes very hard to mobilize them again because the core belief becomes:

“Effort won’t change the outcome.”
