JESUS IS KING – SO CHRISTIANS CAN ENGAGE POLITICS WITHOUT MAKING POLITICS THEIR god.

1. Christians are citizens of two kingdoms.
Scripture tells us that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20). But that does not make our earthly citizenship irrelevant. Precisely because Jesus is Lord over all of life, Christians should take seriously the communities, institutions, and nations in which God has placed us.

2. Voting is an act of stewardship.
In a representative form of government, citizens possess a real measure of political authority. We help select the people who make laws, administer justice, and exercise governmental power. Christians should think of the vote not merely as a right, but as something entrusted to us that should be exercised thoughtfully and responsibly.

3. Voting can be an expression of love for our neighbors.
Political decisions affect real people: families, children, the poor, the vulnerable, workers, business owners, and entire communities. Loving our neighbor includes caring about the conditions under which our neighbors live. Our vote is one way, though certainly not the only way, that we can seek their good.

4. Christians should seek the welfare of the place where God has put them.
Jeremiah told the exiles to “seek the welfare of the city” where God had placed them (Jer. 29:7). America is not the Kingdom of God, and Christians should never confuse the two. But we should want our cities, states, and nation to be places marked by justice, peace, order, and human flourishing.

5. Government matters because people matter.
Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2 present civil government as having a legitimate, God-given responsibility to preserve order, encourage what is good, and restrain evil. Government cannot redeem the human heart. Politics cannot save us. But government still matters enormously because its decisions affect the lives of people created in the image of God.

6. Christians can be principled without being partisan.
Our political convictions should be shaped first by Scripture and Christian moral teaching, not by loyalty to a political party. Some issues involve clear moral principles. Others involve prudential judgments about the best policies or candidates. Faithful Christians may sometimes reach different conclusions about those questions.

7. Christians should vote without placing their ultimate hope in politics.
Jesus is King before an election, during an election, and after an election. That frees Christians to participate seriously without participating desperately. We can care deeply about political outcomes without treating politics as our savior.

8. Christian citizenship should look different.
Christians should bring conviction and charity, courage and civility into public life. We should refuse the temptation to hate, demonize, or dehumanize people who disagree with us. Every political opponent is still a person created in the image of God.

9. Voting is important, but Christian citizenship is much bigger than voting.
Scripture calls Christians to pray for governing authorities (1 Tim. 2:1–2), honor those in authority (1 Pet. 2:17), seek the welfare of our communities, serve our neighbors, tell the truth, pursue justice, and contribute to the common good. Good citizenship happens between elections as much as it does on Election Day.

10. This is one reason the ministry of Capitol Commission matters.
Before legislators are Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or progressives, they are human beings made in the image of God. They carry enormous responsibilities and often enormous burdens. Capitol Commission does not exist to lobby legislators or tell them how to vote. We are there to pray for them, pastor them, provide confidential spiritual counsel, open the Scriptures with them, and point them toward the hope of the gospel.

Two great sheets churches & individuals can use to think, pray, and give to advance the gospel, & develop "iron-sharpening-iron" relationships within Arkansas' Capitol community.

With this in mind if you, your church, or group would like to hear about God's plans for the church; including gospel hope for the nations and their leaders, with a report from Arkansas, our nation, and other countries, let's book a time.

If you are apart of the Arkansas' Capitol community... an elected or appointed leader, staff, or lobbyist, and would like to be refreshed, encouraged, washed with the Word of God, & would enjoy fellowship with your colleagues, let me know. We have a downtown group that currently has room to grow, and I am praying about starting a new group under the AR Capitol dome.

If you are not fortunate enough to live in the Great State of Arkansas, you can still check to see if there is an amazing ministry leader there, and if there isn't, how you might help by praying for the leaders and staff in your state, and by reaching-out to our national office to see if we have someone in training, there. Jenni and I really appreciated the time invested with our Capitol Commission team. I was wonderful hearing of God's activity in the U.S. and other nations including 4 new ministry plants. Let the nations and their leaders be exceedingly blessed/glad/blissful/happy in Christ!

It was enjoyable listening and learning about the role, responsibilities, and ministry opportunities from U.S. House Chaplain Margaret Kibben as she spoke to our Capitol Commission team in the Senate office building.

We had several TMS alumni present at our Capitol Commission gathering. Pastor Jesse Johnson kept our group engaged by sharing the concept of "The Expository Ladder". Pastor Jesse is the distinguished-looking gentleman right of my picture (in the suit and tie).

To the left of my picture is author and Capitol Commission State Minister in Virginia, Dr. David Andersen.

To the right of Pastor Jesse is Capitol Commission board member Paul Meinsen, who helps keep our team sharp and has provided us with valuable training.

Right of Paul Meinsen is Pastor Michael Park, who was commissioned by Capitol Commission as the National Minister in South Korea!

It was remarkable how Pastor Park and Dr. Andersen met. David had been praying for a godly leader to guide South Korea's leaders for over a decade. David's wife, Eunjoo, is South Korean, and together they have made several trips to South Korea. God has opened up ministry opportunities, and David was invited to publish his book in South Korea, which he has already accomplished.

Pastor Michael Park, who is a church planter in South Korea, also trained with The Master's Academy International (TMAI). TMAI provided additional equipping beyond his seminary education, preparing Michael to provide advanced training to further equip Korean pastors. He will need our prayers as he navigates the responsibilities of pastoring a church, training other pastors, and ministering to the political leaders of Korea.

John Kim, pictured on the left, played a vital role in training Pastor Park through TMAI. John Kim has been very busy leading conferences and training leaders. You can find more information about his work at https://www.tmai.org/.

I praise the Lord for these faithful men and, most importantly, for God, who has graciously allowed us to know Him and has called and empowered us to make Him known.

While in Washington, DC, our Capitol Commission team met with staff from the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson's office.

It was unique because several on our team knew Speaker Mike Johnson prior to his entering politics. Everyone who knows him personally said something similar. They described him as having a keen mind and as a genuinely godly and principled man, with an incredibly high work volume and ethic. Functioning at this capacity often leaves him with less than 4 hours of sleep. That is why his staff do their best to pray for wisdom and energy and guard his time with only the most important activities.

The staff were very generous with their time and gave us many examples of how God has been providentially working individually and corporately within their organization. It was remarkable, and reminded us that God is working all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

We can all make plans with what we might consider as the best of intentions, but only God can direct our steps.

We prayed for staff members, and David Hoke from Understanding the Word Ministries presented them with custom leather study Bibles.

Dr. Alveda King spoke to our Capitol Commission group while in Washington DC. She is the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King. She was brilliant, funny, and inspiring. It was very wonderful listening to her review her history. We are blessed to have such great and godly women serving our country in high places. Count me inspired.

It was a true delight and no small joy for my wife and me to hear Os Guinness address and interact with our Capitol Commission group in MD. Os exemplifies the phrase "you sir, are a gentleman and a scholar". The photo on the right is the book he provided.
