As Work Zone Awareness Week arrives, itโ€™s a good time to think about the 92 ARDOT workers who have been killed while working over the past 80 years. A ceremony today at the Fallen Workers Memorial focused on what is being done to make this work safer for the men and women who make our roads better. Fines for violations in work zones are now double. New camera systems are being used by the Arkansas highway police, and flashing green lights have been added to work vehicles. When you are traveling, please slow down as you approach a work zone. Letโ€™s try to never again have to add the name of a deceased worker to the memorial. This user-friendly dashboard also gives you all of the information about any project being done in your community, town, or county. ARDOT is committed to the strategic use of taxpayers' resources to make your community better and driving easier. Click the link below to see what projects are underway in your town or region. It took 42 tons of salt and 388,000 gallons of fuel. It also took hundreds of ARDOT workers running 12-hour shifts to remove the snow and ice from our streets during recent storms. In terms of driving and road issues, it was the worst kind of storm. There was ice mixed in, followed by freezing temperatures that lasted for days.

More than ever before, the department rehearses for days like this in the summer and fall. The planning to keep people and equipment effectively spread across the state during winter weather is complex.

This is the type of planning and ex*****on that Arkansans expect ARDOT to be doing with taxpayer resources. Well done, ARDOT, and thank you to the men and women who work in the dark of cold nights to keep us functioning during weather like this.

Drive safely, and please put that cell phone down when you are on the road.

Sunshine and temperatures creeping above freezing are a welcome relief today for the men and women who have been working around the clock since Saturday to keep Arkansas roads clear. Traffic was, for the most part, moving smoothly on the interstates overnight. Right now, sunshine and salt are the combination that will help us all get back to normal. Most schools are still closed, but health care professionals, road crews, police and firefighters, truckers, and other essential people are hard at work.

Lots of good people working around the clock this weekend to clear and salt roads, and keep more than 1,000 ARDOT vehicles running to help our communities get through the storm. Check out this post from ARDOT on where you can find the latest road info. Stay warm and stay safe.

Please look out for each other in the next few days as the winter weather approaches. ARDOT has 78,000 cubic yards of salt ready to use, 700 snowplows set to roll, and 600 salt spreaders loaded. Bridges will be pretreated by employees working 12-hour shifts. As much as you can, please stay home during these difficult storm days. Check on elderly friends and loved ones, and donโ€™t leave your pets outside. Good Roads members have a great appreciation for the men and women about to spend thousands of hours working to keep our state functioning and keep us safe in the coming days. And of courseโ€ฆdonโ€™t forget to get the ingredients you need to make chili. Stay warm. Be safe.

Bob Crafton is a legend in Arkansas infrastructure circles. Starting in 1962, Bob and his partner Lem Tull built Crafton Tull. A copy that started with two men working out of a cheap motel room today is a highly respected engineering firm with 350 employees. Starting with no money, these two men built a firm that has designed hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of roads, bridges, parks, and other structures. Bob is also one of the nicest, kindest men most of us have ever met. Bob has spent decades on the Good Roads Executive Board, and he is now retiring from the board. 92 Arkansas Department of Transportation workers have died working to repair or replace our roads. This week, ARDOT dedicated a beautiful new Fallen Workers Memorial, which will serve as a place for families to come and quietly remember and honor their loved ones who have died.

The dedication was the largest gathering of ARDOT workers ever. It was a moment to reflect on the price 92 families have paid as their loved ones died while working to make our state a better place. A profound thank you to all of you who donated time and money to make this beautiful monument a reality. To learn more about the 92 workers who paid the ultimate price, click here: ardot.gov

Ground has been broken for a stunning new bridge over the Arkansas River at Barling. This project is part of the ongoing state and federal work to expand I-49. Governor Sarah Huckabee-Sanders was on hand to discuss the jobs and economic growth that I-49 will bring to Arkansas and the nation. The Ft Smith region, in many ways, is at the very heart of the American supply chain, delivering the products that American families use every single day. This remains an exciting time for the Good Roads members who design, fund, build, repair, and put cargo on the roads that are the backbone of our state.
