After three decades of work and planning, the new access road to the Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) has opened. This will reduce travel time and make commuting easier for the more than 1.3 million travelers who will use the airport this year. The dedication involved the airport connector road and the new Springdale Bypass that connects Highway 412 to Highway 112 and includes a tie-in to the new airport connector.

It’s unusual for two major projects like this to come together at the same time. More than 1,000 people turned out in sweltering heat to celebrate this milestone infrastructure development. The Arkansas Highway Police pull hundreds of drivers and trucks off the road each year for drug and other violations. Drug search dogs are employed as police look for hidden drugs being shipped by drug cartels on Arkansas highways. Keeping the roads safe is a 24/7 effort by the men and women keeping our roads safe. Infrastructure discussions in northwest Arkansas get more complicated all the time as population growth continues to explode. Join us in Rogers in July for the Good Roads Summer Meeting, where ARDOT and community leaders will discuss strategies for the future.

The men and women of the Arkansas Highway Police are working each day to stop drug shipments moving on Arkansas interstates and to make sure that all trucks and drivers comply with safety regulations. This work matters more than ever as a driver who can’t read or speak English can’t read basic traffic signs that all drivers need to pay attention to while driving.

The department now has five K-9 teams working across the state to find drugs that are often hidden deep inside trucks. These amazing dogs can search and find drugs in minutes. Previously, finding illegal drugs would have involved taking sections of the truck apart. Good Roads Executive Director Joe Quinn recently spent a day on the road with Corporal Brandon Bybee and his dog Drake. As Work Zone Awareness Week arrives, it’s a good time to think about the 92 ARDOT workers who have been killed while working over the past 80 years. A ceremony today at the Fallen Workers Memorial focused on what is being done to make this work safer for the men and women who make our roads better. Fines for violations in work zones are now double. New camera systems are being used by the Arkansas highway police, and flashing green lights have been added to work vehicles. When you are traveling, please slow down as you approach a work zone. Let’s try to never again have to add the name of a deceased worker to the memorial.
