AFA features a great timber harvesting family and operation during National Forest Products Week!

Read AFA's post, below, that speaks to why Steve Bell Logging was named by AFA as the "2025 Logger of the Year." You can also hear more about their exceptional timber harvesting operations and the positive impacts over the years, at the AFA Youtube channel:

https://youtu.be/5mQDJ8bWACU

To celebrate Forest Products Week, we are highlighting some of the exceptional professionals in our industry! Today we showcase Steve Bell Logging. Steve Bell is a third-generation logger who started his own logging crew in 1983. His son, Jason, joined the operation in 2006 and together they have grown the family business and created one of the most respected logging operations in Arkansas. Steve began working jobs for Green Bay Packaging in 2001. In addition, he also is frequently requested by many private landowners because Steve Bell Logging sets the bar on what a proper logging operation should be. With 13 full-time employees, 13 pieces of logging equipment and seven trucks, Steve and Jason can tackle any logging prescription. Their jobs always follow Arkansas Best Management Practices, and their harvest sites are always clean, taking advantage of the annual training provided by the Arkansas Timber Producers Association. Jason is a member of the ATPA executive board and Steve Bell Logging is an active member of the Arkansas Forestry Association and American Loggers Council.

We are building our online Ark Pro Logger training video library with 2 core modules now offered:

(1) Timber Harvesting & Transportation Safety (TH&TS) - satisfying our core module as well as Logger Continuing Education (LCE) credits; and

(2) Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Water Quality -- satisfying our core module as well as Logger Continuing Education (LCE) credits.

We have other video-based modules in the works to add to our library, making training accessible and convenient for participants.

Our video-based training is housed via Eventbrite, accessible for a per device fee of $25 plus handling. This means you can show your entire crew the video on one screen, which is ideal for interaction and discussion.

These videos support sustainable forestry, the SFI, and other certification efforts, and meet the training expectations of companies adhering to these initiatives and the aims of our Ark Pro Logger program.

If you are interested in training and/or need training credits, visit our Training Page on our website for more information and links to our Eventbrite page (or links to each individual video/module sign up landing page): https://arkloggers.com/training/

How incredibly appropriate for AFA to feature Mike Pennington, President of LD Long Logging, Inc. (located in his home community of Monticello) during National Forest Products Week.

Mike has been a mainstay volunteer and leader not only of AFA, but also of ATPA, serving over the years on our board, advancing the goals of our Ark Pro Logger training program, supporting the Log A Load For Kids campaign, and helping to build and sustain through activism and leadership a political and economic climate in which our industry can thrive. He was an early leader in helping AFA expand its landowner education efforts in the 1990s as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) rolled out nationally, serving on a volunteer advisory board that shaped a seed-grant supported pilot effort.

We recall one of Mike's under-the-radar contributions years ago when he helped coordinate a Log A Load For Kids fundraising dinner and auction at one of our first In-Woods-Expos held in Hot Springs. Hundreds of people walked through the doors who had not pre-registered, hungry and ready to eat, and ready to make donations to our industry's flagship philanthropic efforts that benefit so many of our families.

Mike helped us feed the masses that evening by locating extra areas we could set up tables, and providing much-needed humor and steadiness in chaos. Mike is always present, giving it his all, and helping our respective associations serve our memberships and the sector at-large.

Congratulations, Mike, and thank you for your ongoing contributions and service. Well done!

Forest Products Week day 2 is upon us and today we are introducing to you Mike Pennington, our Lifetime Achievement winner at this year's annual meeting.

Mike Pennington is the president of L.D. Long Logging, Inc., located in Monticello. He is a lifelong resident of Monticello, studied at the University of Arkansas – Monticello, and has spent his career working in the timber and forest products industry.

In addition to being a consummate professional in the logging sector, Mike is an avid supporter of the community. He has served on the Drew County School Board for more than three decades, is active in the Arkansas Timber Producers Association, Arkansas Forestry Association and Drew County Farm Bureau.

He is an enthusiastic supporter of the Arkansas Log a Load for Kids program, and a founding member of the Drew County Log a Load chapter. Mike was recognized in 2017 as the Log a Load for Kids Volunteer of the Year and in 2022 was honored as the Monticello Man of the Year.

The Arkansas Timber Producers Association is thrilled to report on the success of the recent Southwest Forest Products Expo, which saw an impressive turnout of 2,500 attendees. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to our exhibitors, sponsors, and dedicated team who made this possible. Moreover, we appreciate the support from invited state legislators who continue to advocate for crucial industry issues, including addressing a much-needed interstate waiver. Together, we aim to strengthen the forestry sector and promote sustainable practices.
