Founded in 2003, Safe Families for Children (SFFC) is a nonprofit volunteer movement that gives hope and support to families in crisis. Located in 70 cities across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and beyond, Safe Families supports families during crises. We are motivated by compassion to keep children safe and out of foster care. The SFFC movement is based on the perspective that the sa

fety and health of our community children are the responsibility of each one of us and that parents are the key to providing long-term safe environments for their children.

The Core Principles of Safe Families for Children are highlighted below. Primary Objectives: o Child Welfare Deflection: Safe Families provide a safe alternative to child welfare custody, thus reducing the number of children entering the child welfare system. o Child Abuse Prevention: Providing an overwhelmed and resource limited parent with a safe, temporary place for their child without the threat of losing custody can avert potential abuse/neglect episodes. o Family support and stabilization: Many parents struggle because of limited informal social supports and unavailable extended family. Many host families become the extended-family that a parent never had. o Faith-based: Volunteers are recruited from faith institutions and their faith is a primary force driving their service. o Child Focused: The safety of children is paramount; the objective is to provide a safe family and home to any child as long as they can adequately be cared for in a family setting and the parent(s) retain custody. o Strengthening Families: Committed to strengthening families so that the parents can be Safe Families for their own children. o Volunteer Driven: Host families, resource families and family friends serve without financial reimbursement. o Non-coercive: Parents place children without coercion and can change their mind at any time. o Crisis Driven: Parents need to be in a crisis situation to receive assistance from Safe Families for Children. Our Story

The trauma of child abuse can be devastating and have lasting consequences for a child. Many instances of abuse and neglect can be prevented if families in crisis had a support network of caring individuals to help them in a time of need.

It is from this philosophy Safe Families for Children (SFFC) was born. In 2003, SFFC founder, Dr. Dave Anderson, found that if loving families can provide a safe and caring environment for a child at critical times, we can not only prevent harm to children, but we can enhance a parent's ability to provide what that child needs.

Safe Families for Children is a national movement of compassion that gives hope to families in crisis. A network of volunteers provide safe, loving homes for parents to voluntarily have their children cared for while they restore stability in their own lives. Our dedication to family support, stabilization, and child abuse prevention is driven by responsibility for the well-being of children in our communities.
