Secondary School Initiative

Secondary School Initiative Little Rock is in need of returning to community based schools focused on the education of our children.

We consider ourselves to be concerned parents focused on improving the educational standards of the LRSD. It is important to educate the community on the problems in our current secondary schools, especially the severely over capacity facilities and prevalence of academic distress in 3 of our 5 high schools and 2 of our middle schools. Expanding the LRSD by building new schools based on community

needs is a sound economic investment in our city’s future, as well as our children’s future. Our Little Rock School’s should be an attractive force to draw in new business and industry not a deterrent. The problems we face require long term vision not looking for the next quick fix to our current educational issues. We believe it is time our communities come together to focus on the education of our children by raising the standards to promote academic excellence.

Attended the LRSD’s Gold Shovel Ceremony today for the Pinnacle View High School. My favorite thing was the first speaker, Keith Morris Jr., a student from Don Roberts Elementary, who proudly told the audience, “welcome to my future high school”.
I hope the young Mr. Morris has a fantastic academic path moving from elementary to middle school to high school in LRSD public schools with his friends, tracking in proximity, and with this community.
The school is slated to open to students in 2027. That will be 17 years in the making for this accidental advocate who was once told I couldn’t ask for a middle school AND a high school. I spent many years asking anyway.
Today was a good day.

West Little Rock is another step closer to having a public high school in the west.

“Board member Greg Adams made the motion to approve the $145.6 million plus the addition of six classrooms.”

“The Little Rock School Board on Thursday voted — but not without some sharp words — to proceed with the construction of a 1,200-seat traditional high school on Ranch Drive in the northwest part of the city.
The board’s 7-2 vote sets a construction price of $145,638,731 plus the cost of six classrooms, which had been taken out of the plans as a way to save money.”

Y’all need to organize. Like, real quick. If you let this slide, you won’t have a traditional public LRSD high school for a very very long time.
Parents with students in kindergarten/elementary age - you need to be informed and involved NOW.

Little Rock School Board members need a couple of weeks to come to terms with the heart attack-inducing rise in construction costs for a promised new high school campus out west.
