UA Little Rock Nonprofit Leadership Student Association

Students enrolling in the program receive a nationally recognized certificate from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, upon completion of a bachelor's degree.

We are the UA Little Rock Nonprofit Leadership Student Association, a campus organization comprised of students enrolled in the Nonprofit Leadership Studies Program. Students may also choose to declare Nonprofit Leadership Studies as a minor. The program:
has a strong competency emphasis,
uses an internship requirement for strength of comprehension and application,
builds a network of

nonprofit professional contacts,
builds on and enhances a student's chosen major field of study, and provides the tools to achieve success.

Stop by on Wednesday and see Emiley at our event! She does some awesome work in our community, check out her full bio below!

Emiley Bee grew up and has lived in central Arkansas her entire life. She studied psychology at Arkansas Tech University and Social Work at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While in graduate school, Emiley worked as a mental health technician at Pinnacle Pointe Behavioral Healthcare System as well as interning in the Women’s Clinic of the Little Rock VA Hospital. There she served on the front lines of implementing and evaluating programs for women Veterans. Passionate about creating a better community, Emiley found a good fit in her current position as a business analyst for the Good Grid, a comprehensive social services portal designed to support those re-entering society and reduce recidivism in the state of Arkansas. As a Licensed Master of Social Work, Emiley specializes in connecting those in need with mental health and educational services. She is currently one of 34 students chosen for the inaugural Executive Master of Public Service program at the Clinton School of Public Service. Outside of work, Emiley enjoys learning new ways to serve her community by participating in classes such as the Non-profit Board Institute training at the Junior League of Little Rock.

Our students started their next conference day bright and early! Downtown KC had so much to offer!

Our students were able to attend a series of energetic QuickFire sessions from experts in various fields of the nonprofit sector. They especially enjoyed sessions “Plan It. Write It. Share It.” with Merrigan & Co President Merrit Engel, and Creative Director Monica Tiffany, “Making Your Way As A Community Based Helping Professionals” with CHIME’s Arika Lycan, and “How Leaders Get It All Done Through Priorities-Based Calendaring” with PeopleWorks Founder & CEO Tara Tamburello.

Following this many students attended an eye-opening session, “Managing Your Nonprofit Career: Stories From the Field” with an experienced panel who freely shared their triumphs and learning experiences.

Their afternoon consisted of an adventure into downtown KC, each student visiting a different site. These sites included the National World War I Museum and Memorial, the Negro League Baseball Museum, the Union Station Kansas City Inc., and the Kansas City Public Library - Central Library.

Their day ended with engaging workshops like “Make Special Events the Center of a Small Agency’s Annual Development Plan” and “Innovative Program Design for Today’s Nonprofit Organization”, and a rigorous simulation workshop.

These simulation workshops seemed to be the highlight of many students’ later afternoon. We heard a lot of excited chatter about the issues they were able to discuss, whether it was related to policy or nonprofit brand and mission management, even hearing these discussions carried into our students personal conversations. What a great way to ensure mental and social engagement with the surrounding nonprofit environment.

We are so proud of our students and so thankful to downtown KC! 🙌

Our AMI 2018 sharing kicks off now!

Captured here on the very first night of AMI 2018 are our two graduates, Candace Culbertson-Fall 2017 and Deja Smith-May 2017. Some of you might be doing the math and saying, “Heyyy...wait a minute!” Yes, Candace Culbertson completed the NPLS Program, received her CNP at AMI 2017, and is now a UA Little Rock alum with her own nonprofit—Youth Development Initiative, Inc.

So, what happened?

What happened is she drove all the way to Kansas City from Little Rock AND paid her own way to attend AMI 2018.

CAN WE SAY PHENOMENAL.

Deja Smith is someone we’ve enjoyed posting about lately 🤗 Well, not only did she shine as one of the students receiving Certified Nonprofit Professional status at AMI, but she also landed her first nonprofit job! WHOA 😆 We know that Deja is well on her way to positively impacting our community, and exemplifying everything AMI 2018 emphasized: continual connection to your community and those around you, as well as innovative utilization of all this age has to offer to better serve your community.

Moments like these are what reveal the hearts of our students, hearts that collectively make up the NLSA and NPLS programs at our University.

We also have it on very good authority that they made the most of their first night! They ventured into downtown KC (and got lost for a little bit so they really ventured, haha), attended some amazing QuickFire sessions, and enjoyed a beautiful dinner accompanied by an inspiring keynote from Rockhurst University’s President, Rev. Thomas B. Curran, S.J.

That opening ceremony was called, “What’s the Big Idea?” We think looking to these two stellar students clearly shows what the big idea is: continued excellence on the path to exponential impact.

Had it not been for the stellar teamwork our students participated in, sprinkled with a generous helping of mutual support and encouragement, our fundraising campaign would not nearly have been as successful as it was. Our students ALL did a fabulous job, collectively raising a record amount of funds.
