Hi!
Last Friday, Little Rock Peace for Palestine hosted our 3rd annual community gathering honoring the Nakba Day at Dunbar Garden. Over 70 people came together to remember the Nakba on its 78th anniversary.
Al-Nakba, which means the "great catastrophe" in Arabic, is used to reference the displacement and ethnic cleansing Palestinians faced on May 15, 1948 when Israel was violently created, then later recognized by the UN and international community.
To commemorate the Nakba, we heard from proud Palestinians, Ebrahim, Essa, Raouf, and others regarding their families’ resistance and lives in Palestine before and after the Nakba. We also heard from academic, Dr. Shirin Saeidi, who was recently terminated from her position with University of Arkansas following her public support for Palestine and her call to end the genocide in Gaza.
Together, we shared in traditional Palestinian food while artist, Talia Winkler, painted a mural featuring poppy flowers and watermelon, known symbols of Palestinian resistance.
At the end of the event, we were led by members of the Arkansas Local Food Network in preparing sage and mint, native plants used in Palestinian cuisine, to take home to plant and use to make traditional teas.
Funds were raised for BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, an organization that works with Palestinian refugees and advocates for the right of return.
Thank you for everyone who attended, spoke, and donated to Badil!
