Hi!

Last Friday, Little Rock Peace for Palestine hosted our 3rd annual community gathering honoring the Nakba Day at Dunbar Garden. Over 70 people came together to remember the Nakba on its 78th anniversary.

Al-Nakba, which means the "great catastrophe" in Arabic, is used to reference the displacement and ethnic cleansing Palestinians faced on May 15, 1948 when Israel was violently created, then later recognized by the UN and international community.

To commemorate the Nakba, we heard from proud Palestinians, Ebrahim, Essa, Raouf, and others regarding their families’ resistance and lives in Palestine before and after the Nakba. We also heard from academic, Dr. Shirin Saeidi, who was recently terminated from her position with University of Arkansas following her public support for Palestine and her call to end the genocide in Gaza.

Together, we shared in traditional Palestinian food while artist, Talia Winkler, painted a mural featuring poppy flowers and watermelon, known symbols of Palestinian resistance.

At the end of the event, we were led by members of the Arkansas Local Food Network in preparing sage and mint, native plants used in Palestinian cuisine, to take home to plant and use to make traditional teas.

Funds were raised for BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, an organization that works with Palestinian refugees and advocates for the right of return.

Thank you for everyone who attended, spoke, and donated to Badil!

78 years ago, the Nakba began.

750,000+ Palestinians expelled. 500+ villages erased. The right of return promised — and denied.

That never stopped.

🇵🇸 West Bank today: Slow displacement, daily. Homes demolished in Masafer Yatta, Hebron, Jordan Valley. Families are forced out while settlements expand. The same Nakba, made to look legal.

🇵🇸 Gaza today: 1.9 million displaced — again. Most were already refugees from 1948. Entire cities turned to rubble. Hospitals. Schools. Universities. A genocide unfolding live.

This isn't a new war. It's the same Nakba, 78 years later.

We remember the keys. We name the villages. We count the dead.

We will not forget. We will not call this "conflict."

🇵🇸 From the river to the sea.

Reminder: Our 3rd annual Nakba Day community gathering is only 3 days away!

Join us in honoring the 78th Nakba Day to remember the 750,000+ Palestinians who were forcibly displaced from their indigenous homeland in 1948 by Zionist militias.

We will hear stories about Palestinians’ ongoing struggle for return, freedom, and dignity. We will plant sage and watermelon seeds & share a recipe for Palestinian sage tea.

Free vegetarian food will be provided by Maryam’s Grill.

We will raise funds for BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, an org that works with Palestinian refugees and advocates for the right of return.

On this day, four years ago, the world lost a journalist of rare courage. Shireen Abu Akleh — the voice of Palestine, the face of honest reporting. She was shot while covering an Israeli military operation in Jenin, wearing a blue press vest and a helmet marked "PRESS."

In her own words:

"I chose journalism to be close to people. It might not be easy to change the reality, but at least I can bring their [Palestinians'] voices to the world."

Her legacy is not just in the stories she told, but in the thousands of journalists who continue to speak truth under fire. Accountability remains elusive, but so does forgetting.

Rest in power, Shireen. Your microphone is now carried by many. 🎙️🕊️

This Mother's Day, we honor them.

The mothers who held their children through war.
The mothers who buried their children and still woke up to mother the ones who remained.
The mothers who erased themselves — giving the last bite of bread, the last blanket — so their children could survive.

They resist — not with weapons, but with care, with testimony, with the refusal to disappear.

This is not a tragedy. This is a genocide.
These mothers did not die. They were killed.

And we will not look away.

Upcoming partner event this Monday!

Join us for a timely and thought-provoking evening with Peter Beinart as he returns to Little Rock to discuss his powerful book, 'Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning'.

Explore questions of identity, history, and moral responsibility in the wake of ongoing Genocide and ethnic cleansing, and participate in meaningful dialogue.

Whether you are familiar with his work or engaging with these ideas for the first time, this event is an opportunity to listen, learn, and be part of an important conversation.

Following the talk, there will be a book signing with Peter Beinart. We are also pleased to share that a limited number of free copies of the book will be available to attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.

April 17th – Palestinian Prisoners' Day.

9,600+ Palestinians are in Israeli prisons today.
350 of them are children.
84 are women.
3,532 have never been charged with a crime.

They are tortured. Starved. Sexually assaulted. Denied medicine.
Some have had their organs stolen.
Some have died in detention.

And still, they resist. Still, they smuggle s***m to create families. Still, they hold onto hope.

This is not a "conflict." This is a prison system built on oppression.

Free them all. Every single one. 🇵🇸🕊️
