Poise is not stiffness, and confidence is not performance.
Sometimes confidence looks like trying the step, laughing when it is imperfect, recovering, and staying fully present with the people around you.
We want students to leave LRJC more capable-not less themselves. Social confidence should make room for warmth, personality, and genuine joy.
Parent prompt: Ask your student when they felt most comfortable being themselves during Opening Evening.

Our new Four Pillars ribbons are already finding their way home with students. Confidence. Courtesy. Character. Community. Those are the qualities we practice at LRJC, one greeting, one conversation, and one thoughtful choice at a time. I loved seeing students wear their ribbons at our gathering. There is a point in an evening like October 3 when the room starts to relax. Students have made the first introduction. Now they are listening, finding a partner, and trying the next step together.

That practice is the heart of Little Rock Junior Cotillion™. A student does not have to feel perfectly confident before joining in. We give them a place to start, a chance to try again, and other young people to practice with.

The pink details were easy to spot on October 3. One of the best parts was watching what happened once students came into the room.

They checked in, found someone to greet, and began meeting classmates. At Little Rock Junior Cotillion™, we started with business casual because learning to dress for an occasion is part of reading the room. Then we practiced the part that matters even more: a clear hello, eye contact, and making another person feel welcome.

Those little moments are why we make time to practice together.

Good conversation begins before anyone finds the perfect words. It begins with attention.
An open posture, eyes up, hands free, and a stored phone tell the person in front of us, “You matter in this moment.” When the conversation becomes quiet, the pause is not an emergency-and a screen does not need to rescue us from it.
At LRJC, our technology-free environment gives students the space to remain present, ask another question, listen to the answer, and try again. That is how conversation confidence grows.
Ask your student what they can do when a conversation becomes quiet.

October 3 gave us so many good moments: warm greetings at the door, friends catching up, and students practicing together across the dance floor. We loved seeing the pink accents and, even more, the confidence it took to greet a new partner and join in.

Different rooms ask different things of us.

At our October 3 Business Casual with a Pink Flair evening, LRJC students will practice situational awareness: noticing the setting, adjusting their presentation, giving others their attention, and choosing words and technology habits that fit the moment.

Fifth grade will learn the foundation. Sixth grade will apply it with stronger judgment. Seventh and eighth grade will practice using it independently in realistic social settings.

Because confidence is not simply knowing what to do—it is noticing what the moment needs.

Changing partners gives students a compact lesson in social grace.

Finish the interaction instead of drifting away. Thank the person in front of you. Move promptly when directed. Greet the next person without comparing the two experiences.

Students practice the mechanics in the ballroom, but the larger lesson follows them everywhere: transitions deserve courtesy too.

Parent prompt: Ask your student what makes an ending feel clear and considerate.

A simple challenge for our students: at the next gathering, introduce yourself to one person you do not already know. Ask a question, listen to the answer and help the conversation continue.

Being new should not mean being alone. The most gracious person in the room is often the one who notices who has not yet been included.

Manners are not a performance of perfection. They are the outward signs that we are paying attention: a greeting offered, a chair held, a name remembered, a phone put away, or a correction received with composure.

At Little Rock Junior Cotillion™, students practice making respect visible in ordinary moments. Those small choices shape how a room feels—and, over time, how a young person leads.
