From the Revolution to the Arkansas Frontier

In honor of America’s 250th birthday, we invite writers to submit genealogical articles about families present during the Revolutionary era whose descendants later lived in Arkansas.

These stories illuminate how early American lives and legacies continued long after independence—reshaping communities in the 19th century and beyond.

Submissions are now being accepted!

This presentation explores Find a Grave as a valuable tool for genealogical research, highlighting both its strengths and its limitations. We will look at how genealogists and family history researchers can use memorials, tombstone photographs, burial details, family links, and contributor-added information to generate clues that support broader research. The presentation will also address important questions about accuracy, source evaluation, memorial management, and best practices for using Find a Grave.

The Polk County History Center welcomes Cheri Hudson Passey, a professional genealogist, instructor, writer and speaker, for an in-depth look at how to use historic directories.

City directories were once the go-to resource for finding information about residents, businesses and local addresses. Today, they remain a powerful tool for genealogists. Reading a directory can reveal unexpected clues about family members, community connections and additional records that may otherwise be overlooked.

The speaker will appear virtually at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25. Guests are invited to participate via Zoom or attend in person at the Polk County History Center, 100 E. Main St., Bartow.
