Mount Holly Cemetery The city's oldest and most beautiful cemetery is home to governors, state Supreme Court Justices, U.S Gates are open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Founded in 1843, Mount Holly has been called the, “The Westminster Abbey of Arkansas.” Thousands of visitors come each year. Those interested in history come to see the resting places of the territorial citizens of the state and of twelve state governors, seven US senators, four Confederate generals, two Pulitzer Prize recipients, black artisans, and a Cherokee princess. For others the cemetery is an open air museum of artistic eras: Classical, Victorian, Art Deco, Modern––expressed in gravestone styles from simple to elaborate. Some come to read the epitaphs that range from heart breaking to humorous to mysterious. The cemetery is maintained by the Mount Holly Cemetery Association, a non-profit organization with a volunteer Board of Directors. The cemetery is located at 12th and Broadway Streets in Little Rock, Arkansas. in the summer and from 8 a.m. in the winter.

Students from the Drama Department of Parkview Arts & Science Magnet High School in Little Rock research a person buried in Mount Holly. Student guides lead the audience through the cemetery, stopping at the graves where student actors are stationed. The actors deliver short monologues or dialogues to highlight their characters’ history and lives, and they wear period costumes created by costumer Holly Payne.

This year’s performance of Tales of the Crypt is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Fred Boosey, former Theatre teacher at Parkview Arts-Science Magnet. In 1995, he was the first director of Tales of the Crypt. Through his eyes, students learned to appreciate the history of Mount Holly Cemetery. He relished working with the actors on their performances. To him, Tales of the Crypt perfectly combines interesting information and engaging entertainment. Mr. Boosey continued to come to “press day” each year after his retirement to watch the students’ performances and offer his support to Mount Holly and Parkview’s combined efforts on Tales of the Crypt.
