As the public health emergency moves into fall, studies and surveys are showing that it is having a significant impact on mental health and substance abuse or misuse. We want you to know that you are not alone if you are struggling and that there are lots of resources available – many even free or covered by your insurance.
In a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, for example, 53 percent of adults in the United States reported that their mental health has been negatively impacted due to worry and stress over the coronavirus, which is significantly higher than the 32 percent reported in the poll in March. Kaiser found that 36 percent of adults reported difficulty sleeping and 12 percent reported an increase in alcohol consumption or substance use. A recent CDC study had similar findings with younger adults, racial/ethnic minorities, essential workers, and unpaid adult caregivers reporting disproportionately worse mental health outcomes, increased substance use, and increased thoughts of su***de.
