Dear Neighbors,

Here is information about several upcoming events that may be of interest:

The Community Church of Douglaston (39-50 Douglaston Parkway) will hold its second annual Autumn Apple Festival on Saturday, October 18 from 11 AM to 3 PM. Click here to see the details:
https://www.ccdouglaston.org/events/apple-festival--40/2025-10-18 (I'll be there carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns; if you happen to be in the area, stop by to say hello.)

The annual Green Gala of the Alley Pond Environmental Center is on the evening of October 23 at the beautiful Terrace on the Park overlooking Flushing Meadows Park. Among the honorees this year is our own Vice President Victor Dadras of Dadras Architects! It's always a lovely event, with a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. I encourage you to attend -- it's fun, and it's for a great cause! Tickets can be purchased through the APEC website by clicking here: https://www.alleypond.org/apecs-2025-green-gala.html

On Sunday, October 26 from noon to 2 PM, Zion Church will host its annual Halloween Drive-Thru trick-or-treat event. Families can drive (or walk) through the church cemetery -- decorated, or course, to be suitably spooky! -- and children will receive candy from a variety of local organizations whose representatives will all be in costume.

Alley Pond Environmental Center is a nonprofit, environmental education organization in Queens dedicated to educating children and adults in the New York metropolitan area, protecting and preserving...

The next meeting of the Westmoreland Association will be on Saturday, September 20. We will meet outdoors at our own Glenwood Landing Park at the corner of Glenwood Street and 39th Road. The meeting starts at 4 PM, but come earlier at 3:45 to greet your neighbors and enjoy some light refreshments. You're welcome to bring your own lawn chair to sit more comfortably.
We’ll give an update about the City of Yes litigation; we'll talk about some very disturbing instances of vandalism on automobiles; we’ll discuss a recent violation of one of our Protective Covenants concerning fences; and we’ll talk about plans for our forthcoming 9th Annual Fall Cleanup at Glenwood Landing Park, tentatively planned for Saturday, November 22.
We’d also like to hear from you about how the summer was in our area – any significant disruptions in our local parks, or other issues of concern?
We hope to see you at the meeting!
(The rain date is Sunday, September 21; if necessary we'll announce a change on this page and via email.)

David Diaz was one of the most respected television journalists in New York City for over thirty years. He was also a friend and neighbor, and a member of the Westmoreland Association Board of Directors. He died in March, and on August 14 there was a celebration of his life in Riverside Church in Manhattan. This news story includes tributes from his colleagues and some of the many whom he mentored and taught. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/david-diaz-celebration-of-life/
We, too, are thankful for his many contributions to our City and our community.

The life and work of journalist and educator David Diaz was celebrated Thursday, on the eve of what would've been his 83rd birthday.
