If you're planning to have a real Christmas tree this year, it's important to keep safety in mind. Here are some tips to help keep your home and family safe:

1. Choose a fresh tree: Look for a tree with green needles that are hard to pull off and don't break when bent. If the needles are brown or fall off easily, it may be a sign that the tree is dry and could be a fire hazard.

2. Keep the tree hydrated: Make sure to keep the tree stand filled with water at all times. A dry tree can easily catch fire, so it's important to check the water level daily and add water as needed.

3. Keep the tree away from heat sources: Be sure to place the tree away from any heat sources, such as fireplaces, radiators, and heating vents. These can dry out the tree quickly and increase the risk of a fire.

4. Check your lights: Before hanging your lights on the tree, make sure to inspect them for any damage, such as broken bulbs or frayed wires. If you notice any issues, replace the lights before using them.

5. Don't overload outlets: Be sure to spread your lights out over multiple outlets and avoid overloading any single outlet. This can help prevent electrical fires.

6. Turn off the lights: Always turn off the Christmas tree lights before going to bed or leaving the house. This can help prevent fires and save energy.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and happy holiday season for you and your loved ones.

Watch this video from the National Fire Protection Association about what can happen if you don't follow the tips mentioned:P

If you made it to the Little Elm Fire Department Open House last weekend, you likely saw some of our Fire Department Explorer group in action as they assisted and interacted with our visitors—young and old!

Our program is open to young men and women ages 14 to 20 years old who are interested in learning more about a career in the fire services industry.

Unless otherwise noted, we meet weekly on Tuesdays at the Public Safety Building from 6-8 p.m. (1800-2000 hours). Explorers are trained in various aspects of firefighting and EMS by Little Elm firefighters and paramedics.

The Physical Agility Test (PAT) is a requirement for all firefighters. To successfully complete the PAT, firefighters must complete it under 6 minutes and 45 seconds.

Our Explorers were put to the test and were all able to complete the PAT within the required time! By practicing this test, these Explorers are preparing themselves for the real deal.

These explorers got to see and experience the many aspects of water and boating safety, fire prevention, and water rescue techniques. Water safety practices and water rescue techniques are important for anyone to learn when living near a body of water. And of course we had to finish with a game of rock-paper-scissors!
