The Sogkonate Garden Club & the Stone Wall Stewards of Little Compton are presenting two workshops of interest to those in our community who have stone walls on their property. The first is Wed. Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Little Compton Community Center. This workshop will explain who the Stone Wall Stewards are, what they do and how you too can document your stone walls with a phone app the group has developed.

The second workshop will offer “hands-on” clearing and stone wall repair information. It is scheduled for Sat. Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. Attendees must pre-register at [email protected]. Day of: meet near 265 Peckham Road, Little Compton. Attendees should wear sturdy shoes and tick protection. Attendees should also bring loppers, clippers, crowbar, shovel and a bucket of fist-size “chink” stones. (This workshop was originally scheduled for Sat. Sept. 26 but was postponed due to rain.)

Have you been seeing fireflies this summer? In Rhode Island, fireflies are usually active from late June through the end of July. Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are actually beetles. They produce light through a chemical reaction in their abdomens and use their flashing lights to attract mates.

When you first see the flashing lights of fireflies rising from the grass, the flashes may seem random. But if you watch closely, you’ll notice patterns. Some fireflies flash just once at steady intervals. Others flash twice quickly, then pause before flashing twice more. Still others make a longer flash and swoop through the air with their abdomens glowing. Each of these patterns belongs to different species of firefly. The flash patterns are like coded messages sent to potential mates of the same species—“Here I am, come find me!”

If you want to see and identify fireflies this summer, try looking in meadows or along the edges of woods right around sunset. Fireflies like damp environments with lots of native plants to perch on and no pesticides!

Looking for more info on fireflies? Many online resources, such as the Massachusetts Audubon website (massadubon.org) are free to access!

One of our most favorite programs is our 1st Grade Seedlings project. Sogkonate Garden Club volunteers work with students as they learn what it takes for a seed to sprout and grow!
Tuesday, we planted zinnias and marigolds and made further observations with our planted peas.

The Sogkonate Garden Club visited WMS today for the Grade 1 Seedling Program! 🌱

Students spent time in the greenhouse checking on their seedlings and journaling their findings. This hands-on experience encouraged curiosity, observation, and a deeper understanding of how living things grow and change.

Thank you to the Sogkonate Garden Club for providing such a meaningful and engaging experience for our students!
