Recently, Healing the Children Wisconsin collaborated with Dr. Rick Hodes in Ethiopia to facilitate the medical treatment of 4-year-old Aklesia. Through our international medical assistance program, she traveled with her parents from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, India, for a cardiac procedure. She had pulmonary valve stenosis which required a heart balloon valvuloplasty procedure. This procedure will greatly improve the quality of Aklesia’s life. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Rick Hodes, Dr. Krishna Kumar and the entire medical team at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences for their exceptional care and support. We would also like to thank our sister chapter, Healing the Children Kentucky for their generous financial support of this mission. It takes a village to save the life of a child.

Today we celebrate our friend Joe Roman.

For 45 years, Healing the Children Wiscosin has been helping underserved children worldwide to secure urgently needed medical care unavailable in their own countries. Over the years our mission has expanded to include providing medical assistance to children in a country closer to their home country and international special projects including building schools and providing educational assistance to students. Our work is realized through the generosity of volunteers who give of the time, talent and funds to heal children.

Joe Roman was one of those people who not only gave of his time and his talent, but opened his heart, his home, and a seat at his table. He was humble, funny and incredibly generous.

Joe was a valuable member of our Wisconsin chapter. He served on our board of directors for many years and volunteered on medical, dental and missionary building trips to Central and South America. In 2017, Joe and Sara volunteered to supervised the construction of a school in the village of Teotecacinte in northern Nicaragua.

Joe and Sara selflessly hosted and cared for 14 foreign children in their home that were in need of urgent medical treatments and surgeries unavailable in their own countries. Many of those children have kept in touch over the years. In more recent years, Joe and Sara continued to provide respite care for families hosting foreign children brought in county for surgeries. They would greet children at the airport,
sit with host families during surgeries and visit with the children at the hospital.

Although our Healing the Children team will truly miss Joe, his presence will be felt through the long legacy that Joe leaves behind. Well done, good and faithful servant. Rest in peace, Joe.

Healing the Children Wisconsin board members, Bob and Martnie, were foster parents to 3 year old Magyerin from Nicaragua in 1998. He had clubbed feet and endured months of changing casts, surgery and then grueling physical therapy to learn to walk before returning to his family. He now lives in Minneapolis, and reached out to Martnie through Facebook. He came to visit Bob and Martnie last weekend - what a blessing to see Magyerin all grown up and doing well!!!!

Healing the Children board member, Bob, volunteers at Children’s Wisconsin with his therapy dog, Puccini. They bring joy and laughter to all the children that they visit. This past week they bumped into Children’s Wisconsin ER nurse, Erica, who also serves on our board. Thank you, Erica, Bob and Puccini for all you do to help heal children.

Great news! All four children’s surgeries were successful. Healing the Children Wisconsin teamed up with Kayla from Paty’s Project to provide life-saving heart surgeries in India for Hanifa, Esther, Godfrey, and Fortunate. After two weeks in India, they are now back in Uganda recovering under close supervision of their family physician, Dr. Isabirye Henry Prosper.

Through our International Medical Assistance Program, we share a common mission with Paty’s Project and Dr. Isabirye Henry Prosper to heal the hearts of children in Uganda. Thank you to the entire staff at Amarita Hospital in India, particularly Dr. Kumar and Dr. Brijesh, for their dedication and passionate efforts to help save these children. Thank you to our donors who made these surgeries possible through their financial support. The smiles on the faces of Hanifa, Esther, Godfrey, and Fortunate speak to the excitement of a new beginning of a lives filled with health and happiness.

Healing the Children Wisconsin has accepted four children into its International Medical Assistance Program this year and will be paying for all their heart surgeries. We are working with Paty’s Project to bring these medically fragile children from Uganda to India for open heart surgeries. All four children have tetralogy of fallot which it a serious congenital heart birth defect. The surgery to repair their little hearts is not available in Uganda.

Hanifa is 3 years old and the youngest of six children. She has tetralogy of fallot with severe valvular stenosis. Her father makes bricks and her mother sells food along the road. They all together live is a one room house.

Esther is 5 years old and is the youngest of three children, sadly one of her siblings passed away. She also has tetralogy of fallot with severe pulmonary stenosis. Her single mother supports the family by selling food, they live with their grandmother.

Godfrey is 4 years old. He has tetralogy of fallot with severe pulmonary stenosis. His physician, Dr. Henry, tells us that he comes from a hard social situation. His single mother supports them by selling fruit.

Fortunate is 9 years old. She also has tetralogy of fallot and had a partial repair in India last year. Her heart defects were so complicated and it was too risky to do all at once. She will travel back to India this year for the remainder of her TOF repair.

Please keep Hanifa, Esther, Godfrey and Fortunate in your prayers as they get ready to travel to India next month. It takes so many people to help makes these surgeries possible. From Dr. Henry in Uganda, the surgeons and hospital in India, to our partner Kayla from Paty’s Project and all the people who generously donate funds to help pay for these life saving surgeries. Thank you! If you would like to contribute to their surgeries you can do so at healingthechildren.org and designate donation to the Wisconsin chapter or send a check to:
