The Lancaster County Firemen’s Association represents the more than 80 Lancaster County Emergency Service Organizations members and over 750 individual members who protect the residents of Lancaster County. LCFA provides professional development training and education; maintains a fire school; operates a Fire Safety Trailer for public fire education; publishes the Pennsylvania Fireman; and hosts the second largest FIRE EXPO in the country.

It is Fire Prevention Week! Take time to learn how small actions can make a big difference in preventing fires and protecting the people you care about. This year, NFPA is dialing in on safe charging habits to reduce lithium-ion battery fires.

Throwback to a show-and-tell for the public at Nichols (current location of Weis Markets) in Ephrata in the early 1970s held by Zone 1 companies. One photo captures a live demonstration of a life net. Life nets were once a familiar piece of equipment on fire service ladders as spring loaded canvas and rope rescue devices used to catch people jumping from upper stories of burning buildings.

Look closely and you’ll also spot apparatus for 1959 and 1964 and a 1955 ladder.

Today, we remember the lives lost 25 years ago, and the families, friends and communities forever changed. We honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call. We also recognize the many emergency services personnel who continue to put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve others.

On Friday, September 11th, the Lancaster County Commissioners, alongside Lancaster County’s first responders, will hold a remembrance event for those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Additionally, the Commissioners will recognize the 52 Lancaster County First Responders who have died in the line of duty with a wreath laying ceremony.

Lancaster County is one of the safest counties in the Commonwealth, due in large part to the thousands of first responders across our community. It is their service to the community that keeps citizens and property safe.
Speaking at the memorial this year will be leaders within our first responder community representing Fire, EMS and Police services in Lancaster County. The Board of Commissioners will be joined by:

EMS Chief Darrell Fisher - New Holland Ambulance and President of the Lancaster County EMS Council
Assistant Chief Mason Brandt - Fire Department Mount Joy and President of the Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association
Chief Chris McKim - Ephrata Police Department and President of the Lancaster County Police Chiefs’ Association

Lancaster County is fortunate to have collaboration across County Government, the First Responders Community and Law Enforcement. We are safer as a community thanks to the work of these brave men and women.

The ceremony will be held on Friday, September 11th at 9:00 AM at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center 101 Champ Boulevard, Manheim, PA 17545. The public and media are invited.
