Join us for our annual Wild Night Out! Come out to meet our special ambassador animals, like Delila the broad-winged hawk and Jeffrey, a black rat snake. You’ll hear about them and other wild native animals in AWARE’s care from our trained handlers.

We will be at the Inman Park Trolley Barn on October 22nd. You will also enjoy great food provided by El Tesoro and music by the CoResonance String Quartet.

We’re excited it’s finally October, so we can celebrate Bat Appreciation Month.

This AWARE patient is an eastern red bat, one of only 16 species native to Georgia. Recognizable by their distinct rusty-red or yellowish-chestnut coloring, they are also quite small, being only about 4 inches in length and weighing around 0.5 ounces.

This patient came in with an injured wing, and will be at AWARE until she recovers enough to return to the wild. Like all native species, this species is insectivorous, feasting on mosquitoes, moths, flies, ants, and beetles, helping to keep the insect populations down.

Want to learn more about our native animals? Join us at AWARE on Saturdays and Sundays for a free tour of our rehabilitation center. You will meet some of our wonderful ambassador animals, learn their stories and hear why AWARE’s dual mission of wildlife rehabilitation and public education is so important.

Tours start on our porch at 1pm and last about 30 minutes. Each tour features different ambassadors and animal facts, so we encourage you to visit us more than once! AWARE is located at the base of Arabia Mountain, with the main trailhead only feet away.

What is Baby Season??

It’s the time of year between March and October that we at expect a steady flow of baby animal intakes. From flying squirrels to chipmunks, and even baby birds, it’s definitely the busiest (and cutest) season of the year!

The American toad is one of the most widely distributed toad species in North America. They play a crucial role in controlling garden insects and have proven to be tolerant to a wide range of habitats.

Today’s features this juvenile Cope’s gray tree frog! These tree frogs are known for their excellent camouflage skills, changing color from gray to green to brown. Check out the large toe pads on the frog pictured here, used for climbing trees as its name suggests!🪾🌳

One of our volunteers found this Cope’s gray tree frog near AWARE with an injured forelimb, a fractured wrist, and a wound on its back foot/thigh. Rehabilitation will include wound disinfection and monitoring the frog’s overall mobility before a hopeful release.

Red bats are some of the most common mammalian neighbors we have in the Atlanta area - and they're pretty cute too, no? This one has been in care at AWARE for about a month after suffering injuries to his wing, shoulder, and tail.
