It was a cool and overcast day, but it was a great day for the friends, family, and donors to officially celebrate the completion of the Fredrickson Family Fitness Park, dedicated to Dr. Duane Fredrickson. The park is for all ages, and of course, is available at no cost to use. There is a bike share rack, a bike repair station, a shelter area under the blue tarp for stretching, warm-ups, cool downs or yoga, or just to sit and visit after a walk on the beautiful Valkommen Trail, or a bike ride! On the day of dedication, the "key" to the park was turned over to the City of Lindsborg, by the Lindsborg Community Health Care Foundation, the "sponsor" of the fundraising portion, and the partner with the City of Lindsborg for the project.

We are so excited to celebrate the dedication of the Fredrickson Family Fitness Park this Sunday! The family will be here as the Foundation "turns the key" over to the City of Lindsborg. We hope to see you there as we all remember Dr. Duane Fredrickson on the close of Svensk Hyllningsfest weekend.

Inside story: The logo of the Fredrickson Family Fitness Park was developed by a mother daughter team. The team created the logo with love for the project, yes, but mostly for the love of the man to whom the park would be dedicated and bear the family name. Julie Messmer and daughter Annika are the daughter and grand-daughter of Duane and Nancy Fredrickson. Julie and Annika were committed to developing the face of the park from the very beginning.

It was no surprise to see their Swedish heritage reflected in the finished logo. The Fredrickson children, Scott and Julie, grew up in Lindsborg, learning, celebrating and practicing Swedish tradition, authentic and Lindsborg-style. Their love and appreciation for Lindsborg and Sweden has carried into their adult lives, and those of their children.

In Julie's words, the logo "is a combination of Swedish kurbits, landscape and a person. The kurbits is designed to look like a landscape of a rolling hill, sky and sun, however, if you look at the circle it also represents the head and the blue swirl are the arms." You can see the swirls, color and movement present, representative of heritage, landscape and exercise!

Perhaps you aren't familiar with 'kurbits'. Kurbits refers to a long-bodied gourd. The poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt, wrote of the painted wall hangings of Dalarna, popularizing the term in the 1920s. In Lindsborg, one can find the broad strokes of the paint brush, the blending of muted colors, the detail of the whimsical flowers, in our churches, galleries, schools, and in the art and crafts of local artisans. Surely kurbits are the unofficial flower of Lindsborg, the botanical equivalent of the Dala horse!

We couldn't be more excited to have the Fredrickson Family Fitness Park as a location for the City of Lindsborg's Bike Share program! Check it out---drive down to the park, do a little stretching to warm up (not too hard, these days) a gentle 30 minute workout, then grab a bike and take a ride on an award winning trail! Come back and rest in the shade of the signature blue canopy, and return to your car via the sidewalk, purposefully connected to the parking lot. Do it early...or wait for the weekend! It's gonna be a cool, cool, weekend!

Ready to ride?
Bike Share is here and available to everyone. Simply download the app (use the QR codes in this post's graphic), set up your profile and that's it - you're ready to go!

Couple of things to note: You will need to enter in a form of payment when you create your account on the app even with the 30-day free code. Why? Good question! Having payment info on file will ensure that the bikes are returned to either of the three racks located at the stations around town.

IMPORTANT NOTES: The 30 days of free rides are good for a one (1) hour increment and then the bike must be re-docked in a station. Once it's docked, you can once again check it out for free for another hour. This is a safety feature designed to prevent theft.
Once the app is downloaded, it only takes a minute or two to successfully check out or return a bike.

Each bike is tagged with a unique license plate, so try and ride all of them! You never know when a contest might be announced...

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. We are so incredibly excited for this program and we hope you enjoy it! We also want to give a big thank you to our community partners, Bethany College and Lindsborg Community Hospital.

Safe travels!

It is a project that didn't get off the ground in 2015, and failed again in 2017, but in 2020, the concept found new life, thanks to a partnership with the Lindsborg Community Health Care Foundation and the City of Lindsborg. Now, the LCHCF is pleased to announce the dedication date for the Fredrickson Family Fitness Park on Sunday, October 15 at 1:30 pm. The park is located at the south trail head parking lot, and can be identified by the bright blue shade tarp. We've got so much to share with you about this wonderful addition to our community, but in the meantime, we invite you to explore and try the equipment. The equipment is low impact, and is designed to improve balance, flexibility, and core strength. Each exercise station has instructions for use. If you are so inclined, there is a terrific shaded area suitable for early morning yoga, or coffee if you take a break from the trail. We think it is perfect! Please follow us on this FB page as we share more details in the coming days and weeks! Countdown to dedication!

This is what can happen with surveys, dreams, hard work, open minds, generosity and community partnerships! We are pleased to announce the construction of the Fredrickson Family Fitness Park is taking place---RIGHT NOW!

After two years of fundraising and grant applications and COVID, the ground preparation has begun and the concrete will be poured. Beth Ferguson, the City Rec Director, was instrumental in the equipment and vendor selection has ordered the equipment and funds to purchase transferred from our Foundation to the City. The equipment has been shipped and will be installed as the weather allows. With the equipment, surfacing, shade structure paid for, additional (and desired) amenities still need to be funded. You can contribute to the project, named in honor of long-time family physician, Duane Fredrickson, by donating to the project fund through the McPherson County Community Foundation here: https://bit.ly/3oamXCf
