“Environmental contamination doesn’t stop at the edge of a field. What ends up in our waterways can ultimately affect the communities that live, work, fish, and recreate downstream. We have a responsibility to support farmers and communities alike in building a food system that protects both public health and the environment,” said Bianca Lopez, VIP’s co-founder.

PFAS or “forever chemicals” have been linked to numerous health concerns.

"Real protection, [Kathleen Kilpatrick] contends, requires reducing pesticide use near schools and neighborhoods — not simply expanding a monitoring network that captures only part of the problem."

For families in Watsonville and the Pajaro Valley, California’s pesticide air monitoring system offers the appearance of protection while leaving significant gaps in what is measured and how exposure risks are understood, writes retired nurse and healthcare activist Kathleen Kilpatrick. “Their new regulations are failures,” said Mark Weller, the campaign director for the statewide public-interest group coalition Californians for Pesticide Reform. “They put in new regulations and 1,3-D use went up.”

Regulators insist they’re committed to protecting health and the environment, yet continue to allow growers to use a deadly chemical banned in 40 countries.

💧We must protect our water from PFAS!

At least 45% of the tap water in the U.S. is now contaminated with PFAS, the forever chemicals tied to cancer, cardiovascular disease, low birthweight, and effects on the immune system.

But despite the risks, The EPA is rolling back and delaying key protections against PFAS in our drinking water. Communities deserve safe drinking water. It's actually the bare minimum.

"The proliferation of forever chemicals in Californians’ food and the continued approval of PFAS pesticides by state regulators leaves no doubt California lawmakers must pass Assembly Bill 1603." Nathan Donley from Center for Biological Diversity

PFAS chemicals were found in nearly 40% of samples of nonorganic fruits and vegetables California regulators tested in 2023. A bill would ban their use.

🚱EWG report finds that PFAS-linked pesticides have contaminated about half of California’s surface water and sediment tests. These “forever chemicals” don’t break down and can accumulate in our environment, our wildlife, and potentially our bodies.
