Today, we remember and honor Master Officer Joseph Shinners who gave his life in the service of our community.

Master Officer Joseph Shinners
Died on January 5, 2019
Age 29
Provo Police Department
Homicide: Handgun

Master Officer Joseph Shinners was killed while trying to apprehend a wanted fugitive in Orem. A team of officers located that person in a shopping center parking lot near 50 West University Parkway. When another officer attempted to arrest the man inside a vehicle, the suspect fought and began to drive away with the officer. Officer Shinners ran to the aid of the officer, entered the truck, fought to control the suspect’s gun, covered the officer with his own body, and was shot. Officer Shinners fired back and struck the man once. Officer Shinners was a three-year veteran of the Police Department and a member of the Patrol Division. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

As we spend time with our families this Christmas Eve, please join us in a big thank you to those that will be working this evening. Thank you to our police officers, dispatchers, firefighters, and our on-call public works employees. In this community we also recognize the nurses, doctors, and many other essential employees that remain at work waiting to respond to us in our time of need.

Our life is better with each of you in it! Thank you!!

Earlier this week, we hosted a Communication & Team building workshop for PG Fire and their significant others. The couples participated in different activities that demonstrated healthy communication skills. The Chief was brave enough to walk blindfolded through a path of rat traps with the help of his wife.❤️ We love you PG Fire!
