Sea Scout Ship 228 - Sea Dart II Page Sea Scouts from Ship 228 train aboard LiNE vessels including the Sea Dart II and more! See more information on our website www.ship228.com.

Sea Scouting is open to both young men and women who are at least 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade or 14 years old. The maximum age for participation remains under 21 years of age... We also have a program called Maritime Explorer Club for middle-school aged Scouts. It’s the adventure of a lifetime, so set sail aboard the Sea Dart II for a unique experience! Sea Scouts from ship

228 operate the 65’ vessel Sea Dart II, one of the largest Sea Scout vessels on the east coast, along with a fleet of smaller vessels including sailboats from their base located in Linden, NJ. Our vast resources combined to offer the most diverse Sea Scouting program in the area. Far different from traditional Scouting, Sea Scouting offers young adults the opportunity to travel and learn skills that could be useful in future careers. The program extends far beyond sea going events and trips; it offers a variety of social events, training and leadership experience. Whether you’re steering the vessel from the wheelhouse, learning engine room repair or visiting a new port on one of the many trips, there’s something you’ll enjoy in Sea Scouting. So, try something different, check us out, and prepare yourself to set sail for a real adventure.

Over the past two months, several of our Sea Scouts have been working on their World Conservation Award!
As part of this, they have been hard at work conducting ecological investigations into water quality, soil delineation, and pollution.
They’ve had the opportunity to use multiparameter probes to test the Navesink and Rahway Rivers, Munsell Charts to color soils and identify redox features, and do titrations to measure dissolved oxygen.
Participating in (and leading) these investigations broadens their horizons and connects them to a global community of scouts working to protect their environment!
We can’t wait to continue these investigations throughout the winter months!

Yesterday, Ship 228 worked with our WMA 7 Ambassador and the North American Marine Environment Protection Association to clean up the Rahway River as part of the initiative!
27 volunteers from our ship, alongside 10 volunteers from Troop 14 - Metuchen, picked up about 2000 pounds of trash! Stay tuned as we get the official numbers!
We are so proud of the work our scouts did for the environment and we appreciate all the work our WMA Ambassador, Betsy, and the NAMEPA representatives, Meghan and Rachel, for helping to make this possible.

Yesterday, we held our first meeting of the winter season and what a productive meeting it was!
Scouts practiced their marlinspike and seamanship skills. Some of them even completed a Bridge of Review for their next rank.
We are so proud of all our scouts who refined their skills yesterday! We would also love to say BRAVO ZULU to Rikard and Bobby for earning Apprentice, Brandon for earning Ordinary, and TJ for earning Able!
We can’t wait to see what our scouts do next!

Yesterday, Ship 228 joined Ship 5 on the Navesink River for a paddling day!
But that’s not all … we also did a river cleanup for - over 5 miles of river, our sea scouts did their part to reduce pollution. One scout even found a tire!
Most importantly, our scouts and families had a blast and wrapped up the day with food, fun and fellowship (and an impromptu soccer game).

This weekend, Ship 228 helped out at Raritan Yacht Club’s regatta with the Steven’s Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers!
Our sea scouts helped load and unload the sailboats, then got aboard another vessel to serve as race patrol. A very big shout out to the members of the club who taught our scouts about racing rules and regulations!
We can’t wait to participate in more regattas in the future.

Today, one of our scouts, Erwin, organized a Veterans Food & Toiletries Donation Drive at the Samuel R. Shelton VFW Post 2294!
This was a spectacular opportunity to give back to our local veterans and we appreciate the work this post does to preserve and strengthen our community.
