At 11:30am, SPC made a slight shift south with the enhanced risk (level 3 of 5). That makes sense as high resolution data is hinting at the higher severe parameters setting up a little further south compared to data yesterday.

Keep in mind, our entire area is still in a risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening.

Here’s the thoughts for this event…

Strong to severe storms will begin to develop across northwest Alabama shortly after 1pm. A few supercell storms will likely develop across east Mississippi during the early afternoon, then spreading into west Alabama.

The cells will likely merge into a large line of heavy rain and thunderstorms this evening, ending from northwest to southeast overnight.

Storms will be capable of producing tornadoes, hail and damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center has most of west Alabama outlined in a risk of an isolated strong tornado or two.

Flooding is also a concern, especially near and south of I-20. Rain amounts of 2” to 4”.

Here’s the timeline per our west Alabama Counties…

2pm - 8pm for northwest Pickens, Lamar, Marion, Winston, Fayette and northwest Walker County.

4pm - 10pm for Pickens, Tuscaloosa, southeast Fayette, Walker, Sumter, Greene, Hale, northwest Bibb County.

4pm - 12am for Marengo, Choctaw, southeast Hale, Perry and southeast Bibb County.

Stay weather aware today! I’ll try to keep putting info out as it comes out. Make sure you have a good source to receive weather alerts.

Our entire area is in a severe risk this afternoon and evening… I’m highlighting an area where there is a higher tornado risk to the south of Tuscaloosa.

Severe weather parameters will be quite elevated in the area circled in red. This is where there is a higher chance of a long track tornado.

Everyone across west Alabama need to have a plan and be ready to take action if a tornado warning is issued for your area.

The severe risk could begin as early as 2pm across west Alabama, ending by midnight.

IMPORTANT TIMELINE CHANGE!

New data is in agreement the severe risk begins earlier than previously expected. See the map below.

Have a plan today!

SPC has expanded the enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) south to now include areas as far south as Butler, Dixons Mills and Selma. A slight risk (level 2 of 5) surrounds the enhanced risk.

Storms late this afternoon and into the evening hours could produce high wind, hail and tornadoes. SPC mentions the chance of a strong tornado or two.

The threat begins in our northwest counties (Hamilton, Haleyville, Vernon areas) by 3-4pm, shifting south into the evening. By midnight, the threat of severe weather should have ended for our counties. Rain and thunder will continue until 4-6am before ending.
