General information

The Penobscot Bay Carvers & Artists Association (PBCAA) got its start in 1988 when Walt Simmons was approached by John Jewell and Dave Richards with the idea of starting a “club.” Walt must have liked the idea because they soon had their 1st meeting in the upstairs of Karen’s shop, joined by Karen (Walt’s wife), Debbie Flood, Vertine Carter, and Linda Jewel (John Jewell’s wife). Club members continue to meet to this day on the 2nd Sunday of every month to discuss not only club business but to share projects we are working on and to exchange advice and tips about “how to get things done.” “The Club” also holds a “Carvers and Artists” competition yearly at the Belfast Boathouse; the club held its hold its first competitions at the Chamber’s Information building in Belfast, where the Purple Baboon is located now. Eventually the club competitions would relocate to the Abbott Room at the Belfast Public Library and then to what was known as the National Workshop of the Handicapped, the old Belfast High School. When the Belfast Boathouse opened, the competitions were relocated there and have been there ever since!
