Happy Flag Day!
Each year on June 14, we Americans celebrate Flag Day, honoring the adoption of the Stars and Stripes through a resolution put forth by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The resolution declared that the new nation's flag would consist of 13 alternating red and white stripes, representing the original colonies and 13 white stars on a blue field, symbolizing a new constellation of states united in the pursuit of liberty.
Now, more than two centuries later, and consisting of 50 stars, our nation’s flag remains as a powerful symbol of freedom, courage, sacrifice and the enduring ideals upon which the United States was founded. This flag has accompanied Americans through times of triumph and hardship, flown over battlefields, buildings, schools, homes, and historic moments that have shaped our nation…a nation made up of immigrants from many countries (including Czech-Slovaks) whose diversification has made our country what it is today.
On this Flag Day, we honor not only the flag itself but also those many generations of Americans who have defended the principles for which it represents. It is a day to reflect on our history, celebrate our unity despite our differences and renew our commitment to the values of liberty and justice for all.
May our nation’s flag continue to inspire hope, courage, solidarity and patriotism for generations to come.
