Eventide Health Tip: Is Better Breakfast the Key to a Better Day?

For some, the first meal of the day is a smoothie, while others enjoy toast. When someone first told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, did you just take their word for it?

Why does breakfast matter? Even if it’s a grab-and-go apple or a last-second bagel as you head out the door, eating breakfast regulates your blood sugar, thus helping you combat stress, irritability, brain fog and dips in energy. Breakfast is crucial, especially for older adults, as it ensures nutritional needs are being met, keeps energy levels consistent throughout the day and can prevent the nauseating effects of taking morning meds or vitamins on an empty stomach. Breakfast deniers may also face long-term health risks such as unreliable metabolism and heart disease. If you have trouble eating in the early hours—a mid-morning meal can be just as beneficial!

The best breakfast? Let's talk about the tasty morning trinity: protein, fiber and fat. Implementing this trio into your morning meal won’t just keep you fuller longer, it’ll also improve your gut health and aid your digestion throughout the entire day. Examples: a greek yogurt parfait, an egg and veggie scramble or a breakfast sandwich with greens. Don’t have the time in the morning? Try prepping overnight oats the night before, blend up a quick smoothie or grab a store-bought granola bar with mindful ingredients.

What about my morning coffee? Hold off on the joe for an hour or so—the best beverage to start your day is a cup of water. If plain water doesn’t strike your fancy, add a splash of juice or a few slices of fruit, like lemon or lime. A cup of tea can also hydrate you and offer helpful antioxidants. The good news: you can still have your coffee, but to avoid jitters, drink your latte in the late-to-mid-morning when you’re a little more hydrated and your stomach isn’t empty.

Now that you know the ins and outs of breakfast, you’re ready to seize the day with brand new breakfast ideas and recipes. If all the inspiration is too much for one meal, don’t forget that breakfast for dinner is another option—and it’s just as fulfilling.

On August 10, Eventide Hospice was honored to celebrate and conduct a Veteran Recognition Pinning Ceremony for Antone (Tony) Dolezal, a resident of Brookstone in David City. Tony proudly served in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy during his military career.

The ceremony opened with a prayer by Tiffani Brewer, Spiritual Care Coordinator with Eventide Hospice. Lindsay Tonniges, RN Case Manager, shared a poem, and Susan Stearns, Volunteer Coordinator, presented certificates recognizing Tony's service. Tony's son, Bruce Dolezal, had the honor of pinning his father!

Guests were then treated to an eight-minute harmonica medley performed by Tony, featuring Taps, military service songs, You Are My Sunshine, and other favorites. Tony also shared memories and stories from his time in the military.

A special highlight of the ceremony was the surprise recognition of Bruce's own Navy service, as Tony had the privilege of pinning his son! Tony's daughter, Jean Spohrer, expressed her pride in both her father and brother and shared memories of Tony's military service.

The program concluded with a poem and a prayer. The event was a meaningful tribute to Tony's service and a celebration of his family's legacy of military commitment.

Thank you Tony, and Bruce, for your service! ❤️🤍💙

August is Eye Exam Month, the perfect time to take a proactive step for your eye health.

Is sight the secret window to your health?

Your eyes are to thank for reading these very words! While some may think of them as pesky, eye exams are crucial to keep your eyes in working order so you can experience countless more marvels.

How does seeing dictate satisfaction? At the very beginning of life, as an infant’s sight develops, so does its brain. With sight comes the ability to visualize—or picture things in your mind—and equally important is the ability to merge millions of visual stimuli into scenes your brain can comprehend. Therefore, it’s not surprising to learn that sight plays a sizeable role in your overall well-being.

Seeing an enriching sight can lower feelings of anxiety and cultivate your cognition in a unique way. On the other hand, when your vision declines or is entirely lost, it’s common to experience anxiousness, feelings of depression and a desire to self-isolate.

Are there ways to elevate eyesight? Actively taking steps to prioritize your health goes a long way, which is why your annual exams—including for your eyes—are so crucial to your senses. Some natural ways of encouraging your eyesight are maintaining fitness, avoiding smoking or va**ng, wearing sunglasses and managing chronic health conditions.

Also, the old wives’ tale that carrots boost your sightseeing abilities is indeed true! Eating well doesn’t just benefit your belly, but keeps your vision sharp. Start with a balanced diet that includes beta carotene: a form of Vitamin A found in many yellow, orange and red fruits, vegetables and leafy greens!

What’s in an eye exam? A routine eye exam will test your vision and eye health, meaning your optometrist isn’t just ensuring that your prescription is correct, but also that your eyes and eye muscles are working as they should.

Besides the obvious vision changes, an eye exam can also find anomalies that indicate high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol or autoimmune diseases—which can save you future time, money and stress!
