had a winning day in court yesterday! Our students requested exhibits on a case through Nebraska’s public records law, and after months of back and forth, got a hearing scheduled to have them released for review. After a brief hearing on the request, a judge granted our students’ request. Though it seems small, wins like this make a huge difference in reviewing a case and continuing the investigation. We’re proud of our students for seeing this through!

It’s been a busy final month of the semester for ! Our Director and undergraduate intern attended the Innocence Network Conference in Chicago, where we learned more about the causes of wrongful convictions and met Exonerees and advocates from around the world, including some people working at Conviction Integrity Units like Izzy Corngold of the Arlington County CIU in VA. Then the law class celebrated the end of the semester with a paint party to let loose before finals. Most of us decided to paint a landscape, but one student felt drawn to animal portraiture instead 🪿 We’ll miss this class and our students over the summer, and are excited to have some of them return in the fall.

Last week (almost all of) our students went to observe oral arguments in front of the Nebraska Supreme Court, including two criminal cases. Students discussed the different arguments after, and commented on the decorations around the room (the ears of corn carved into the wood) and the quote behind the justices: “Eyes and ears are poor witnesses when the soul is barbarous.”

Today marks the One Year Anniversary of the Nebraska Innocence Clinic! When we launched last January, we had no idea what this year would bring. In the last year, we have signed investigative retainers with four clients, won five motions to seal, assisted in the granting of a pardon, and filed our first innocence filing.
We’ve also made prison and scene visits, and talked to experts and attorneys all over the country. We are so thankful for everyone who contributed to the clinic in its first year, but especially to our clients for allowing us the chance to work on their cases, and to our students, without whom this incredible and difficult work would not get done. We are excited for what the Clinic will continue to do. So here’s to the years to come, and the work that will shape them!
