Calliope's Call

Calliope’s Call is a professional Art Song Performance Group based in the New England area that presents uniquely themed and informative concerts.

Calliope’s Call is a New England-based arts organization dedicated to the performance of classical and contemporary art song for the cultural enrichment of our community and beyond. Our mission is threefold:

• To showcase the vast genre of art song by programming music of traditional classical and living contemporary composers. Our diverse programming demonstrates our commitment to including work

s by composers who are otherwise overlooked by more mainstream classical music programs, including female composers, minority composers and composers of color, and pre-professional or student composers;
• To grant performance opportunities to professional singers and instrumentalists who share a common passion for the performance of art song;
• To provide access to live classical music performance for audiences who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so, such as students and seniors, low-income communities, and incarcerated men and women. At the heart of Calliope’s Call is a desire to instill an appreciation and love for art song in our community. We create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for our audiences to have an enriching and personal concert-going experience.

1 year ago we were in the midst of announcing our latest Call for Scores Winners... how time flies!
While we're taking a break from such competitions this year, we'd still like to celebrate our typically-busy spring season by looking back and appreciating all the wonderfully talented artists that carried us in years prior. 💚🎶

Did you know that we’ve been visited by a NEW MOON? 🌚 🌑

What better time to familiarize yourself with our most in-depth album to date… you guessed it… ‘New Moon!’

‘New Moon’ celebrates the work of female American composers who were and are especially active in the genre of art song. Seamlessly blending contemporary music with compositions from the twentieth century, New Moon explores the themes of love, sexuality, and gender through the lenses of raw emotions and the power of nature. The program features works by Marion Bauer, Jodi Goble, Sarah Hutchings, and Libby Larsen.

The album also features a recorded composition of Valentines from Amherst, inspired by the poetic works of Emily Dickinson and a perfect complementary course to this season’s Emily & Edna show - also on sale!

It's said that everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day... in that case, why not prepare ourselves with this quick playlist of Irish Art Song? Through Ireland's long, storied history, Art Song has been able to evolve in ways that may surprise you - from adaptations of lesser-known Irish legend to once-romantic settings becoming the foundations for political expression. Though the halftime show was a few days ago now, color us inspired by the sheer display of unity and celebration across each and every part of the Americas... We thought we'd join in with some recognition of our own, bringing you a major figure from each of the western hemisphere's big three sectors, even though we could easily have made this list hundreds of names longer. Who knows, maybe that day will come 😉

A lot of big changes came our way in 2016 - we couldn't resist jumping on this trend and revisiting such a monumental year for pop culture. We've grown so much since then, between our concerts, competitions, community involvement... we thank each and every one of you for supporting us this last decade, and we can't wait to see how far we've come by 2036! (Though hopefully it doesn't arrive as fast...) 🥲
