As Eastern Nebraska experienced record rainfall last week, the Papio Creek overflowed its deep embankments, causing a 100-year flood in Omaha's Karen Street neighborhood. Homes were submerged in as much as eight feet of water, and many of the community members do not have insurance policies that cover flood damage.

Since early on Tuesday morning (Oct. 6), Twenty-one students and alumni from Union's International Rescue and Relief Program have been taking time away from classes to lend a helping hand, and will continue serving in Omaha through Monday, Oct. 12. In conjunction with the American Red Cross which is providing free meals for residents, Union's students have gone door-to-door assessing damage and working alongside homeowners as they salvage belongings, clear out mud, and remove damaged drywall and carpet.

"This type of flood is definitely no joke to anybody who lives there," said Aiden Grierson, a sophomore in the program. "It can definitely take a toll on anybody ... people lose everything, they lose all their personal stuff. Anything that we can do to help them is a great deal of service."

Created in 2004, The International Rescue and Relief major remains a one-of-a-kind degree combining rescue certifications, emergency management, global development, and medical training to prepare students to serve in times of crisis. Some of the students plan to be first responders while others will work emergency management, international development, and approximately a third continue on to medical school. The IRR Program's five-year average for medical school acceptance is currently 100%.

The program's Disaster Response Team deploys to natural disasters near and far every year, and their work is fully funded by donations. If you would like to help the team be prepared for future deployments, please give online at Union's website

Tomorrow, Oct 6, our International Rescue and Relief Disaster Response Team will integrate with local and state-level relief efforts to help with crisis cleanup following major flooding in the city of Omaha after a 100-year storm. Our team will primarily help local homeowners clean their water-damaged homes. We appreciate your support as we help our neighbors in Omaha.

Preview Days on Monday and Tuesday brought together 162 seniors from six Mid-America Union academies. The visitors were divided into eight groups, and 13 of Union's academic programs gave them a taste of the majors offered at Union as well as the professions those majors can lead to. Across campus, faculty demonstrated the day-to-day work of professionals in their fields.
