Lincoln Literacy's mission is to strengthen our community with language and literacy skills.

This is the official page of Lincoln Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization based in Lincoln, Nebraska. Established in 1972, it provides English language and literacy skills to adults and families living in Lancaster County.

How are our immigrant neighbors faring in Lincoln? 📍

The Lincoln New Americans Task Force surveyed 500+ immigrant neighbors to understand how our community is growing and where we can better support new arrivals.

We’re so proud that many of our Lincoln Literacy students participated to make their voices heard! Building on the 2020 report, this update highlights Lincoln's shared progress and ongoing goals for local partners like us and the Center for Legal Immigration Assistance (CLIA).

Special thanks to Joy Oyebefun from the Asian Community & Cultural Center of Lincoln, NE for her leadership and dedication to this project.

We had such a wonderful time connecting with everyone at the Harvest Moon Festival (Asian Community & Cultural Center of Lincoln, NE)! A special shoutout to our hardest-working volunteer of the day: Azhar’s adorable grandbaby. 💛

He was super busy handing out free books and Lincoln Literacy stickers to everyone who stopped by our table.

A huge shout-out and thank you to our neighbors at Grace Lutheran Church-ELCA for generously allowing us to park our vans in their lot overnight.

Our student family has grown so much that our main parking lot on Lincoln Mall is simply too small to hold all of our 15-passenger vans without taking away crucial parking spaces from our students and tutors. Having Grace Lutheran just around the corner is a game-changer for us.

To keep our fleet safe, we’ve also installed a security camera monitoring the spot. Thanks to this wonderful community partnership, our vans are safe, ready to roll, and free up space right outside our doors for the learners who need it most.

Did you know that 58.9 million adults in the U.S. have the lowest level of literacy? When adult literacy is low, the impact ripples across generations — children of low-literacy adults have a 72% chance of experiencing low literacy themselves.

The good news? Family literacy programs work.

When families learn together:

🔹 54% of adults seeking educational credentials complete their GED or equivalent.
🔹 45% eliminate or reduce their need for public assistance.
🔹 Closing the national literacy gap could add $2.2 trillion (roughly 10% of GDP) to the U.S. economy each year!

Here in Lincoln, we see this two-generation impact every single day. Through our family literacy partnerships with Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) — including classes hosted at Lincoln High School, elementary family literacy programs, and driver's education for LPS parents — we are proud to help parents and children learn, grow, and build brighter futures side-by-side.

Stronger skills for parents mean stronger outcomes for students.

We had such an incredible time connecting with so many wonderful neighbors at the Latino Festival hosted by El Centro de las Americas!

Our team was out in full force sharing information about our free English language, computer, and workplace skills classes. Spanish-speaking learners make up one of our largest student communities here in Lincoln, and events like this remind us how vibrant, welcoming, and strong our city truly is.
