Our Level 2 students worked hard this spring to strengthen their workplace communication. They practiced real-world conversations on essential job skills β€” like how to request assistance, ask for time off, report workplace accidents or injuries, and notify supervisors when calling in sick. Check out these great photos from Nancy’s Workplace English class at Heartland Gourmet!

Empowering adult learners with practical language tools helps both employees and local businesses thrive.

What would you do if you couldn't report an incident at work?

This is an issue many of our newest neighbors face, which is why we offer workplace English classes tailored to the job.

Here are some of the skills our level 1 and 2 students learned at Instinct (pictured here on graduation day):

- basic workplace vocabulary
- grammar
- conversation skills

They also learned how to use:

- production forms
- scanners
- radios
- iPad applications to report incidents and track productivity and quality

"He is a good teacher."

This was just one of the glowing comments we received about Marc Johnson, our incredible Tutor of the Year, and we think it describes him perfectly.

Marc taught 7 beginner and high-beginner classes during our spring semester and 8 during the summer.

He consistently volunteers to fill in as a substitute tutor when we are suddenly short-staffed, and he earnestly loves it.

Marc has high expectations for his students. He sends them home after class with a folder full of materials to help them study.

He helps his students embrace repetition so they are ready for the next grammar lesson.

Thank you so much, Marc, for all you do for our students!

Sign up to join Marc as a volunteer English language tutor at https://lincolnliteracy.org/volunteer/.

Call for volunteers! New tutor training coming up on August 21, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM.

Want to give back to your community? We want you to help our adult learners as a volunteer tutor. Our tutors teach a variety of literacy skills, from basic reading and writing to advanced conversation, workplace English, math, and computer skills. Our 200+ tutors are the lifeblood of our organization, helping 3,000+ students from all over the world (including lifelong Nebraskans!) build skills so they and their families can thrive.

Our students and tutors form lifelong friendships. It's a joy to watch.

You don't need teaching experience to become a volunteer tutor at Lincoln Literacy. You just need to be able to read, write, and speak English fluently and possess a desire to help others. We will train you!

Lincoln Literacy has been selected by The Starbucks Foundation (Starbucks) to receive a $1,000 Neighborhood Grant. Out of more than 43,000 nominations across the U.S. and Canada, we are honored to be among the local organizations recognized for making our communities stronger.

This amazing gift is all thanks to Brittni Sprouls. Brittni is the Store Manager for the Starbucks at 84th & Eiger Drive here in Lincoln, and since January, she has also been volunteering her time as one of our incredible Wednesday night tutors at Lincoln High School.

Brittni shared, "I absolutely love the time I’ve spent tutoring." We love having you on our team, Brittni! It’s the dedication of neighbor-powered tutors like her that keeps our classes entirely free, helping adult learners gain the language and workplace skills they need to thrive.

We are so proud to be selected for this grant, thanks to local Starbucks partners in our community. Next time you stop by the 84th & Eiger coffeehouse, join us in giving Brittni and her team a huge shoutout! πŸŽ‰β€οΈ
