We have a volunteer work day planned for August 16th! We will be helping Achterberg Wildlife-Friendly Demonstration Farm remove unwanted woody plants from their trail system. This work will help improve the native prairie that provides habitat for a variety of wildlife species on Achterberg.

Since we will be working with herbicide and thorny plants, all volunteers are required to wear long pants, long sleeve shirts and closed toed shoes. We recommend volunteers also bring water, a hat, wet rag and sunscreen. Achterberg will have additional sunscreen and water; they will also provide tools necessary to conduct the work.

If you are interested in getting your hands dirty and helping improve wildlife habitat, let us know by responding here or send an email to [email protected]

Can fire improve your land?

It sounds surprising, but fire can bring life back to the land under the right conditions. In this episode of The Dairy Signal, experts from Pheasants Forever, Britta Petersen and Jake Pulfer, shared how prescribed fire can benefit farms, pastures and natural spaces - along with guidance and tools to do it safely and effectively.

Thanks to all of your support, we are able to move on to the next step in developing our own Kansas PF/QF license plates! That next step is acquiring designs to select from! While we work on developing designs of our own, we would absolutely love to see you put your creative expertise to the test and submit your designs for us to consider. We are currently looking to have one pheasant option and one quail option, but are open to any creative designs that come our way. Who knows, your design may just end up being an official license plate! Please email your submissions to [email protected].

There are of course some requirements we have to follow, and they are:

- SSRG uses CMYK 4-Color Process printing. PANTONE colors can be submitted for reference but will be converted to CMYK. Metallics and fluorescent colors cannot be reproduced using CMYK printing.
- Graphics cannot "bleed" off the edge of the license plate. SSRG requires a 1/4" white or clear border around the entire design. All graphics must fit within 5.5" x 11.5"
- tick marks will be placed in the four corners of the plate design. When applied to the license plate blank, only a small portion of the tick marks will show in each corner of the plate.
- Artwork must be submitted camera ready.
- They require vector-based artwork (Adobe Illustrator).
- If a layout is designed in Photoshop, please provide layered Photoshop document (.psd).
- Preferred file format in order of preference: eps, ai, pdf, & psd.
- All digital images must be at least 300 DPI at actual size.
-Outline all fonts or include them with artwork.

What is a "forb"?

Those unfamiliar with the word might know forbs by the wildflowers or 'weeds' seen along ditches, in pastures and waterways, scattered through rangelands, etc. These plants provide critical habitat for many species from pollinators to upland birds.

🌻 A forb is any flowering, broadleaf, herbaceous (non-wood) plant.
🦋 The monarch butterfly needs milkweed to complete their life cycle as well as other nectaring forbs to provide energy to fuel migration.
🐣 Forbs attract insects, which make up 90% of a young pheasant chick's diet.
🪶 Quail view 'weedy' forbs like ragweed, pigweed, croton, and sunflower as desirable food sources.
