Homer Le’ Porce
Pig Emeritis At Large
Greetings to all worthy citizens who travel the world, from the earth worm’s short journeys to the bird’s annual migration, we all follow our path. As I said last week, we have many faces and friends to meet at Wind Song Sanctuary.
As I prepared for my journey, I did what I always do. I went overboard, with scheduled stops, a complete itinerary, an estimated time for each encounter, and of course, an expense list. What a night mare.
Then it came to me, an epic journey such as this must embrace the random element, if it is to be truly epic. Therefore, as my journey began, I burned my map, left my compass at the barn, and struck out on my way across the barn yard; anticipating my journey.
As I shut the gate to Hampton West, searching for my first encounter, it was already coming my way, in tandem. They arrived with wagging tails, walking slowly on arthritic legs, suggesting we sit under an oak tree, a perfect spot to tell their story.
We were born eleven years ago at Christmas time, black and brown shepherd puppies, begging to be named, Christmas and New Year. Ours was a happy home, and we were well taken care of, for eleven years. Suddenly, our owner died, and we were abandoned, and taken to the shelter, with little chance of finding a home. We were old, hard of hearing and arthritic, two old dogs, not long for the world.
Then, a miracle happened, someone heard about a sanctuary in Lincoln, called Wind Song, a forever home for animals in need. A call was made, and on the thirteenth of March, we arrived, trembling and afraid, hoping we could be loved again.
We now have the special care and medication we need. We take walks around the farm, lie in the afternoon sun, and sleep in our new warm beds at night. We belong here, it was meant to be.
I watched as they walked away with no worries. They remind me of the two brothers in the movie, ‘Second Hand Lions’.
I wonder what will come my way tomorrow.
