Near the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus? Join us at Cather Dining Hall this evening where The Foundry Community is hosting Healing Nebraska: Talent Meets Need.

The event focuses on identifying the needs and pressing behavioral health questions the state should prioritize and you can hear from our 6 summer interns we were fortunate enough to have on our team, including Andrew Moyer, a senior pre-med biological sciences major at UNL, who reflects on his time with NAMI Nebraska:

"This summer, I acted as the NAMI Research and Advocacy intern for NE DHHS Region 5. Partnering with the Intern Foundry and UNL Honors, I had the opportunity to serve diverse groups across the Cornhusker State. As a pre-med student captivated by humanitarian affairs and the role of communication in holistic care, I found myself getting more curious about the experiences of Spanish speakers and immigrants. Ultimately, my data and interests intertwined through a mental health roundtable. I collaborated with Centro de las Amรฉricas, a local nonprofit, to bring awareness, resource access, and community-building to dozens of clients.

In the end, the people who attended were not the only ones who learned; in fact, I learned just as much as they did. As they presented their concerns and questions to me and each other, I realized the power of community in meeting mental health needs. By becoming โ€œneighbors,โ€ those who came to the event grew more comfortable with sharing their worries, which I believe is critical not only for accurate, patient-centered treatment but also crisis prevention. Better yet, my event inspired other groups, like Voices of Hope, to develop similar projects for their clients. I now look forward to continuing to spread mental health awareness with NAMI through programs like Comparatiendo Esperanza (Sharing Hope) and Ending the Silence."
-Andrew Moyer
