Bird nesting season begins as we head into spring!

This burrowing owl seems to have returned to one of our Placer County Preserves this year to nest again. A nesting Red-tailed hawk has also returned to the same preserve for the season!

Our wildlife biologist captured this monarch caterpillar on milkweed on one of our Placer County preserves. Monarchs depend on milkweed as the only host plant for their larvae, making this native plant essential for their survival. For many years, WHF has been fostering the milkweed population on this preserve and it’s so exciting to see the positive impact or work is making!

Despite their spooky reputation, tarantulas are actually docile insectivores found in the arid regions of California. They spend most of their lives in burrows, but in fall, males emerge and traverse the hillsides in search of females. This tarantula was spotted at one of our preserves that straddles Fresno and San Benito Counties.

Happy Halloween weekend, y’all!

Exciting times in the field today as our stewardship and project staff did a test run of our new monitoring app!
