NMRS

"Bi-Skates" (also sometimes spelled "Biskates") were manufactured by RLS Products, Inc. in Los Angeles, California Ralph Leftwich Smith Jr. Produced in the 1960s and 1970s, they were among the earliest commercial inline roller skates, initially developed for off-season roller hockey and later adapted for artistic skating.

50 Years of Community on Wheels (1976–2026)

June 2026 marks 50 years since the first skaters rolled beneath the iconic roof of the Anacostia Skating Pavilion in Southeast Washington, D.C.

Although designed for roller skating, the Pavilion was designated as a multi-use facility by the National Park Service, which operates the site on behalf of the federal government. This unique arrangement set the stage for a rich history of community advocacy, activism, and activation led by local skaters.

On Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 12pm to 2pm come hear about the skate community’s history at the Anacostia Park Skating Pavilion, an Anacostia Community Museum event.

*(Visit Eventbrite for full details: Anacostia Skating Pavilion: 50 Years of Community on Wheels.)*
