THE FIRE ALARM DRILL AT THE CHILDREN'S HOME
by EVELYN KOOP
Twas a morn after Board meeting
And tired we were
We hadn't even begun to stir.
When all of a sudden
There arose such as clatter,
We flew out of bed
To see what was the matter.
So, I in my kerchief
And Nick in his cap
Flew around the room
Like a couple of bats.
We moved all the furniture
Searched in the drawers
But couldn't find out
what was making the noise.
Someone hid an alarm clock,
That's what it was!
But where, Oh where,
Had they hidden that buzz.
So with both of us
All in a frenzy, Ev said,
I'll get one of the girls
to come in instead.
She'll know where the clock is,
But before she come in
You get in the bathroom
Your pajamas are thin.
So Ev went out
To the big girls' dorm.
But the noise was much louder
Than ever before.
She searched through the halls,
and knocked at the doors.
It was much too early
To be doing their chores.
When all of a sudden she looked overhead
And there was the culprit all painted in red.
The fire alarm was going full swing
The Kids were all out - doing their thing.
So exhausted and sheepish
She went back to get Nick
When suddenly the Alarm
Went off with a click.
When Ev told him
He wasn't as smart as he thought
They both stood there looking
Rather distraught.
We've slept at the Home
For all of six years,
And all kinds of noises
Have entered our ears.
The water softener gurgles
The new wood goes crack.
The dogs howl, and trains hoot
From the old railroad track.
But this was a new one
And to our chagrin,
We're just awfully glad
That no one peeked in.
If the alarm sounds again
While down there once more.
I'm sure we'll be first
Going out of the door.
