Nebraska Folklife

Nebraska Folklife The Nebraska Folklife Network is a non-profit Folk & Traditional Arts organization

Founded in 2003, the Nebraska Folklife Network (NFN) is a nonprofit arts and humanities organization that serves as the state’s public folk and traditional arts program. Our mission is to foster, sustain, and increase awareness of Nebraska's living cultural heritage. The focus is on educating the people about the rich diversity that exists in our state and how we’re all part of it. We identify and

support traditional artists, host and attend cultural events, and share with the public a multitude of cultural expressions that exist in Nebraska. Our flagship program is the creation of cultural education trunks that educators in any way can check out for free from our program partner Humanities Nebraska. Humans have a knack for passing on traditions, new and old, so please share with us what you’ve been up to!

We’re excited to share the culmination of our 2024 NEA Folk & Traditional Arts project!

Over the past year, we’ve had the honor of documenting the stories, skills, and traditions of 20 incredible artists and culture bearers from Omaha and surrounding communities. From foodways to dance, storytelling to craftsmanship—each artist brings something powerful and rooted to our shared cultural landscape.

We invite you to explore the project, listen to the interviews, and learn more about these tradition keepers who make Nebraska unique.

If you recognize any of the artists featured, please tag them in the comments and help us celebrate their contributions!

Special thanks to Sharmila Seyyid, our fieldworker, for her work in conducting and coordinating the interviews that brought this project to life.

December 3rd is Giving Tuesday!

For 21 years, Nebraska Folklife has celebrated the cultural traditions that make our state unique, from music and dance to storytelling and crafts. This work wouldn’t be possible without the support of our incredible community.

Unfortunately, this year we did not receive the operational grants needed to cover essential expenses like rent, utilities, and staffing. Now more than ever, we’re turning to you—our friends and supporters—to help keep Nebraska Folklife alive and thriving.

This Giving Tuesday, your donation will help ensure that Nebraska Folklife remains a vibrant resource for the traditions that connect us all. Please consider making a gift and being part of our story!
