As World Landscape Architecture Month comes to a close, we reflect on this year’s theme: "𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣."

This month has shown what that looks like across our region. Ideas becoming places, challenges met with creativity, design shaping how people live, connect, and belong, and experience becoming mentorship.

But within our own chapter, that idea takes on a distinct meaning. We are small in number, with a reach that spans three states. For us, it means:

𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞: bringing our time and expertise to the communities that need it most.
𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲: ensuring our profession is recognized, supported, and protected across every corner of our region.
𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: building fellowship, connection, and a shared sense of purpose among landscape architects.

As WLAM wraps up, we just want to say thank you to everyone who helped make this month so meaningful.

From project highlights to personal stories, student voices, and all the moments in between, it has been awesome seeing so many people share what landscape architecture means to them. Thank you to everyone who contributed, followed along, and helped celebrate the work happening across our chapter.

Action through leadership looks like mentoring the next generation.

"Mentorship is answering the big questions you had 10 years ago for the version of you that exists today. It’s a responsibility shared between all practicing and professional landscape architects to elevate the profession by passing the hard earned lessons learned on to the next cohort. That’s why I love volunteering with , adore the Xtreme LA program, head back to my alma mater ASLA for thesis reviews, and will always drive over to for studio crits (if my schedule allows)."

Around here, Dinosaur Park is one of those places that has been making memories and giving Rapid City its own sense of character for generations.

"Dinosaur Park’s new upgrades create an accessible, safe, and more comfortable climb to the ridge, adding overlooks and interpretive elements that enhance learning while preserving the site’s WPA‑era character. The result is a landmark that can be experienced fully and confidently by visitors of all ages and abilities."

A place designed for well being does more than look good. The Remembering the Children Memorial is a meaningful example of that, creating space for reflection, remembrance, and healing. For WLAM, it is a reminder that action through impact can be found in places that quietly support people when they need it most.

𝐖𝐋𝐀𝐌 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟐 - 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭

This Earth Day, we’re highlighting how landscape architecture supports healthier, more resilient communities through thoughtful land stewardship, planting design, and nature-based solutions.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation protected native pollinators by planting prairie habitat at five rest areas along Interstate 29. Working with SDDOT and the contractor, the landscape architect helped develop a pollinator seed mix tailored to wetland site conditions and designed to provide blooms across three seasons.

The team also used spot spraying and mowing techniques that minimize harm to pollinator species while controlling invasive and noxious weeds. This project not only beautifies these rest stops for travelers, but also helps create and preserve habitat that supports pollinators and protects the environment.
