📄 New Joint Esomar-WAPOR Position Paper: Safeguarding Polling in Bolivia

Today, Esomar and WAPOR are jointly releasing a position paper urging authorities in Bolivia to foster a regulatory environment that enables independent and rigorous public opinion research to thrive.

Public opinion research plays a fundamental role in supporting informed democratic debate and transparent electoral processes. While measures that strengthen polling quality, transparency, and methodological rigour are essential, regulatory frameworks should also strive to preserve fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, access to information, and democratic participation.

In this paper, Esomar and WAPOR outline concerns regarding a recently adopted restrictive regulation governing the conduct and publication of electoral polls and opinion surveys in the context of Bolivia's 2026 Subnational Elections. The joint position paper further calls for future legislative frameworks that:

✅ Protect the free flow of reliable information
✅ Establish flexible and proportionate methodological requirements
✅ Recognise international research standards and sector ethical guidelines
✅ Foster dialogue among regulators, researchers, professional associations, and academia

As the week draws closer to Friday, today’s takes us back to WAPOR’s webinar “How Do Iranians View the War?”, held on March 3rd, 2026.

The webinar featured Dr. Seyed Emamian, joining us from inside Iran. He holds a PhD in Public Policy and Governance from the University of Edinburgh and is currently an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Governance at Tehran Polytechnic University. He is also Co-Founder of the Governance and Policy Think Tank (GPTT), affiliated with Sharif University of Technology.

This webinar provided a neutral, analytical discussionn of how the conflict is reshaping regional dynamics and the potential short- and medium -term consequences.

As we begin our week, we would like to invite our community to explore this open-access International Journal of Public Opinion Research paper tackling a very interesting question: how does knowing LGBT people shape public attitudes toward LGBT-inclusive education?

In “The rainbow connection: le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender social networks and support for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender–inclusive education in the United States”, researchers use nationally representative, probability-based survey data to examine the relationship between Americans’ LGBT social networks and their views on LGBT-related issues in schools.

The study finds that respondents who have LGBT individuals in their social networks tend to express greater support for LGBT-inclusive scenarios in education. The association is particularly strong among those with LGBT friends, compared with those whose LGBT connections are family members or other social relations.

The authors also find that knowing a transgender person is more strongly associated with support for both LGB- and transgender-related scenarios in schools than having an LGB-only social network.

The results are correlational, yet they offer an important contribution to research on intergroup contact, public opinion, education policy, and LGBT inclusion; especially given the comparatively low levels of reported social exposure to transgender people in the United States.
