Happy . Starting today, we encourage you to pick up one of these books to learn more about s*x trafficking in the US.

📖 The Slave Across the Street: The True Story of an American Teen by Theresa Flores — Flores shares how she was enslaved in the dangerous world of s*x trafficking. Her story peels the cover off of this horrific criminal activity and provides a glimpse into the underbelly of trafficking.

📖 Girls Like Us: Fighting for a World Where Girls are Not for Sale, an Activist Finds her Calling and Heals Herself by Rachel Lloyd — Powerfully raw, deeply moving, and utterly authentic. Rachel Lloyd has turned a personal atrocity into triumph and is nothing less than a true hero.

📖 The White Umbrella: Walking with Survivors of S*x Trafficking by Mary Frances Bowley — S*x trafficking. We hear about it on the nightly news and in special interest stories from around the world, but it occurs daily in communities all around us. Every year, thousands of young women are forced into s*xual exploitation. Most are under the age of 18.

📖 Renting Lacy: A Story of America’s Prostituted Children (A Call to Action) by Linda Smith — The average age of entry into prostitution in America is 13 years old. Forced into a life they never chose, manipulated, abused, and tortured at the hands of the pimps who control them, our country's children are sold across America every night.

As school starts up again, look out for these signs of trafficking in youth:
🛑Running away - Kids are more vulnerable to s*x trafficking when they have housing insecurity.
🛑Suddenly having adult-like possessions - They may have large sums of cash, multiple cell phones, prepaid cards, or hotel keys.
🛑Unexplained absences and truancy - They may also withdraw from relationships and responsibilities.
🛑Suspicious injuries or conditions - S*x trafficked kids are regularly treated for drug/alcohol abuse, STDs, pregnancies, or injuries (including bruises, cuts, or other signs of physical abuse).
🛑Sudden appearance of expensive gifts - They may say friends gifted them cash, revealing clothing, electronics, or purses.
🛑Signs of malnourishment or exhaustion.
🛑Answers to questions feel rehearsed - A trafficked person may be forced to stick to a trafficker’s script.
🛑Lack of personal documents or multiple IDs - Older teens may not have a valid ID or may have several IDs with different names.
Keep in mind that one of these signs alone may not be an indicator of s*x trafficking. But together, they can create a larger picture pointing to trafficking.

Meet our new Marketing and Communications Manager, Riley Tolan-Keig!

After graduating from UNL in 2021, Riley started her communications career as an education reporter for the Norfolk Daily News. She found her way back home to Lincoln in 2023, stepping into the role of Copy Editor and Online Content Coordinator. In 2025, Riley felt called to use her skills in a new way and made the shift from journalism to nonprofit work.

Today, as Marketing and Communications Manager, she uses storytelling, social media, and community outreach to shine a light on s*x trafficking and to share I’ve Got A Name's mission.

We love our St. Monica's Behavioral Health Services friends! Always great to see a friendly face at events.
