What wonderful variety this issue holds! We begin with a literature review by Cyr and her co-authors, who situated past and present research within three โ€œlogicsโ€ or values systems. Next, the father and son duo of Strom and Strom and their colleagues tapped middle school student voices to inform tutoring solutions to literacy needs, including peer teaching and cooperative learning. Meanwhile, Skelley, Stevens, and Bailey-Tarbett investigated afterschool tutors use of culturally responsive teaching practices.
In England, Jones studied how secondary school leaders and staff understand and interpret the role of parents at that level. Although Solvason and Winwood are also based in the United Kingdom, their survey of professionals teaming on behalf of children provided insights applicable across the globe.
Remillard and Moist worked with undergraduates to provide math workshops for families and studied the effects on the preservice teachers. Hine focused on the ways different types of communication may affect different parent populations. Next, Rizutto and Steiner examined the use of transformative read-alouds to create a positive sense of community within the multicultural early childhood classroom.
Schuck and colleagues surveyed parents of young children with autism, with results that may help focus future engagement work. Syeda and Bruck described the results for parents and teachers who attended autism-focused trainings together in Australiaโ€”a promising practice. Then Huss pointed our attention to the accessibility of high school websites, indicating many needed improvements; this is one aspect of creating a welcoming environment for families and community members that is often overlooked.
Next, Krijnen and co-authors explained for us a plan to involve parents in shared vision development, as well as the perils in the process. Gibbons and MacLauchlan offered a hopeful outlook from a Guatemalan school, even in the throes of the pandemic. Chatenoud and Odier-Guedj offered a colorful and expanded model for cultivating partnerships with families of students with disabilities. Finally, Martinez-Alba reviews the book, A Librarianโ€™s Guide to Engaging Families in Learning for us. I wish you all happy reading!
