Join Humanities Nebraska for an important conversation on the legacy of the Black press and one of Nebraska’s most influential civil rights leaders.
June 3
1:15–2:15 p.m. CDT
Speaker: Amy Forss
Immanuel Village 6803 N. 68th Plaza, Omaha, NE, United States
Forss will discuss her book Black Print with a White Carnation, which explores the life and impact of Mildred Brown, longtime publisher of the Omaha Star. Drawing from more than 150 oral histories, Black newspapers, and government records, Forss highlights how Brown and the Omaha Star challenged racial discrimination, unfair employment practices, housing segregation, and inequities in education during a pivotal time in American history.
For 51 years, the Omaha Star served as both a bridge between Black and white communities in Omaha and a powerful source of positive news within the Black community — placing Mildred Brown at the center of Nebraska’s civil rights story.
