Join Humanities Nebraska for an important conversation on the legacy of the Black press and one of Nebraska’s most influential civil rights leaders.

June 3
1:15–2:15 p.m. CDT
Speaker: Amy Forss
Immanuel Village 6803 N. 68th Plaza, Omaha, NE, United States

Forss will discuss her book Black Print with a White Carnation, which explores the life and impact of Mildred Brown, longtime publisher of the Omaha Star. Drawing from more than 150 oral histories, Black newspapers, and government records, Forss highlights how Brown and the Omaha Star challenged racial discrimination, unfair employment practices, housing segregation, and inequities in education during a pivotal time in American history.

For 51 years, the Omaha Star served as both a bridge between Black and white communities in Omaha and a powerful source of positive news within the Black community — placing Mildred Brown at the center of Nebraska’s civil rights story.

If you didn’t know, states across the South — including Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas — have been at the center of major voting rights and redistricting battles that civil rights leaders say could weaken Black political representation and voting power.

Now, the Congressional Black Caucus and the NAACP are calling for pushback through college sports. Leaders are urging Black athletes, supporters, and communities to reconsider supporting public universities in states where voting maps are being redrawn in ways critics say dilute Black voting strength.

The conversation comes as lawmakers also debate the SCORE Act, a bill tied to college athlete compensation and NIL rights. Members of the CBC say they cannot support legislation benefiting major athletic institutions while many universities and athletic conferences remain silent on voting rights issues affecting Black communities.

The NAACP and CBC have specifically called attention to schools within the SEC and say this is about more than athletics — it’s about political power, representation, and economic influence.

Whether you agree with the boycott strategy or not, this is becoming a major national conversation connecting voting rights, higher education, and the influence of Black athletes in college sports.

Omaha is honoring the legacy of Malcolm X in a major way. On what would have been his 101st birthday, city leaders unveiled plans for a transformational $100–120 million redevelopment of the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation campus in North Omaha — including a new cultural center and museum, affordable housing, entrepreneurship space, and more.

Born in Omaha in 1925, Malcolm X’s legacy continues to shape conversations around justice, empowerment, education, and economic opportunity. Leaders say the project could become a global destination for civil rights history while also driving investment and opportunity in North Omaha.

Last month, our families partnered with the Sheldon Museum of Art to explore the Hyphen-American exhibit — an experience centered around identity, perspective, and community.

One of our favorite activities challenged us to truly observe art. Partners paired up while one person described a piece of artwork and the other, facing away from the wall, tried drawing it based only on the description. We were amazed by how closely many of the drawings captured the original pieces — and it sparked great conversations about perception, communication, and how we see the world around us.

Thank you to the Sheldon Museum for creating space for learning, creativity, and meaningful dialogue together.
