After 21 years, Marie is retiring from Alpaca Owners Association.

Marie began her work in 2005 with Alpaca Registry, Inc., before the merger that formed AOA. Since then, she has become a trusted source of registry knowledge, steady support, and kindness for members, staff, and the alpaca community.

Those who have worked with Marie know the depth of her knowledge, her warm nature, and her positive spirit. She has helped members through countless questions, records, registrations, and "sticky situations" with patience and care.

On behalf of the AOA staff and Board of Directors, thank you, Marie. We are grateful for your years of dedication and service, and we wish you all the best in retirement.

From Marie:

"What a great ride this has been! I am so grateful to have worked, first at Alpaca Registry, Inc., and now at Alpaca Owners Association. I have met so many wonderful people that have become friends. I will miss talking with you on the phone and meeting and catching up with you at Nationals.

When I was first asked by the employment agency if I wanted to go for an interview at the Alpaca Registry, my first response was . . . no, not 'What is an alpaca?', but 'alpacas have a registry?'. Apparently they do! I have learned so much, and you have been such generous and patient teachers.

My time here has been so fun and educational. Before coming to the alpaca world, I would never have imagined myself saying 'yes, please have your vet send a note saying that the sire definitely has two testicles'!

I am so grateful for the many expressions of thanks that have come from you over the years. It has been my pleasure to have been of assistance in resolving those sticky situations – especially when it’s a 'who's your Mama?' issue!

Thank you all so much! And a special “thank you” to those of you who contributed to the wonderful book of appreciation that was presented to me at the 2026 National Show. I can’t imagine a more perfect gift. God’s blessings on you all. May He Bless and Prosper the work of your hands."

We would like to provide clarification regarding the recently adopted requirement for 840-compliant microchips in Alpaca Owners Association (AOA) show animals.

Moving forward, alpacas that are registered with AOA on or after January 1, 2027, and are exhibited at AOA-certified shows will be required to have an 840-compliant microchip recorded as part of their registration.

This requirement was adopted as part of AOA's ongoing efforts to support consistent animal identification practices and align with current USDA animal identification requirements for small ruminants.

It is important to note that this requirement does not apply to animals that were already microchipped and registered prior to January 1, 2027. Alpacas with existing non-840 microchips that were registered before that date will remain eligible for exhibition and will not be required to be re-microchipped. The only exception would be if you attend a show in a state that requires 840-compliant microchips.
